About this listen

Tech City: Society is obsessed with relentless progress and the possibility of eternal life. A woman and a man meet in waiting room, anticipating a procedure that will incorporate the latest science and technology into their minds and bodies, heightening their awareness and increasing their productivity. Years pass, their relationship deepens and fades, and they grow increasingly uncertain where the AI stops and where they begin. A romantic drama exploring the potentiality of transhumanism, Life Ever After is a rich listening experience that is at once naturalistic and poetic.

Playwright Carla Grauls was awarded a commission through the Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund, an initiative dedicated to developing innovative original plays driven by language and voice. As an Audible commissioned playwright, she received funding and creative support to develop Life Ever After.

Special thanks: Meroe Candy, story researcher; Dr. Gill Haddow based in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, University of Edinburgh; Tom Douglas, Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy, University of Oxford.

Beautiful and thought provoking

Great narration. I couldn’t stop listening till suddenly it was finished. Made me think about our desire to improve, forget our fears and past pains and never make mistakes even though this is what makes us human.

Thought provoking

I thought this would be a simple story, but this makes you reflect. You contemplate growth and maturity. It teaches if you are truly listening. It is not deep, but it has breadth.

New perspective

Well written. Futuristic but so currently real. It was a wonderful audio book that held my interest and kept me captivated with each chapter. It was a great way to spend my relaxing rainy afternoon.

Georgeously written and performed

The story is amazingly coherent (not always easily done for a tale bound in time jumps), and the actors voices are so well chosen! The performances are completely real and consistent; I hated for it to end.
