About this listen

In this next searing tale of the Immortals After Dark series, number-one New York Times best-selling author Kresley Cole delves deeper into the mysterious Clan MacRieve, a family tormented by ancient agonies and forbidden wolven hungers.

Uilleam MacRieve, a centuries-old Lykae warrior, was captured, caged, and experimented on by a shadowy human order, along with other immortals. During a prison break that devolved into one of the bloodiest massacres in recent history, he escapes. But the aftermath of his unspeakable torture preys on his damaged mind, while the wolf inside him roars for vengeance and carnage. In the days leading up to the full moon, can MacRieve rein in his beast, even when he encounters his mate - a vexingly impossible female unlike anything he'd ever dreamed for himself?

Will Macrieve is hotter than hot

Macrieve has been on my pre-order list for awhile now and I can happily say it did not disappoint. I love the Macrieve Lykae Clan and I've anxiously been waiting for a story about either Will or Munro. (The super hot twin warriors)

This one is about Will and it will absolutely melt your heart. Chloe (his mate) is a good match for him and the scenes between these two are intense and toe-curling. As in all of the IAD books there is perfect mix of action and romance. I don't know how Kresley Cole manages to keep her series so fresh and entertaining but somehow she pulls it off brilliantly.

I can't wait for Munro's story next. And I always look forward to more Nix!

Another great Immortals After Dark book

Although the Immortals series is a little bit predictive, this is still a fun read/listen. I particularly enjoyed Robert Petkoff's narration. I wasn't sure that I would like it but he did a great job. If you are looking for a book that is just about enjoying the story, this is the book for you. The characters were fun, although Macrieve was a little annoying with his angst.

No Prince Charming Here!

Listening to the books in this series back to back, without the wait for each new release, has been both absorbing and tedious at times. On the one hand, I am completely enthralled with this series and having to wait for the next book might kill me. On the other hand, there are so many similarities between the books that they can begin to feel unoriginal and redundant.

That being said, this was not one of my favorites in the series. I liked the story of Uilleam, aka "Will", MacRieve and Chloe, but I didn't love it. I give it 3 1/2 stars rounded up, but I could have just as easily rounded this one down.

When Will first recognizes Chloe Todd as his mate, she's about to be auctioned off as a tool for revenge against her father. The daughter of Webb, one of The Order's highest ranking officials, Chloe has unwittingly become a pawn in the war between The Order and the supernatural beings of the lore. There is no shortage of beings that would like to torture Chloe in the same manner in which her father so cruelly tortured them. Will rescues Chloe from the unspeakable, risking his own life to snatch her from the grasp of the winning bidder.

During the days immediately following her rescue, Will is the perfect gentleman. He treats Chloe like a queen, doing his best to woo her and win her affections. I thought that Will was going to be a new favorite of mine at this point.

Then, when it turned out that "human" Chloe wasn't quite so human after all, Will turned into a complete ass. This is where things started to fall apart for me. As Chloe began her transition as a succubus, Will treated her as if she were an abomination. From one extreme to the next, he left my head spinning.

While I understood that he had suffered greatly at the hands of another succubus in his youth, that certainly had nothing to do with poor Chloe. Yet, he repeatedly made her pay for the wrongs of another. He turned from Prince Charming into an abusive, cruel bastard in the blink of an eye.

From that point forward, I couldn't really forgive Will. I pretty much wrote him off and there was oncoming back for him. As far as he was concerned, I was done. Put a fork in it!

Despite Will's lack of appeal, I did love Chloe and Will's brother, Munro. Too bad those two couldn't have been matched up. I would have been much happier if they had!

Chloe was a strong, sassy heroine. Even though she was stuck with Will the super-jerk, she didn't wallow around in misery or allow him to abuse her. She stood up for herself and gave as good as she got.

Throughout it all, Munro was the voice of reason. He provided Chloe with support and a safe haven when her own mate sought to harm her. He tried to make Will see the error of his ways, though his efforts were futile. He even intervened to protect Chloe from his brother. Munro was the real hero in this story if you ask me!

Overall, I enjoyed the story, but not in the way I'd expected. This time around, I found myself frustrated with the love story. It was the backstory and the supporting characters and relationships that salvaged this one for me. In the end, it was alright.
