moves slow, but it's starting to finally pay off

it's really hard to rate this book honestly. I was ready to go three stars. the promise of the premise was that I'd get to see Samazar become a dragon. that's what I wanted since book one and have been dying to see it happen soon enough that I get to revel and enjoy it before the series ends; to see him rule over his tribe as a dragon, bully the humans, and so on.

I've felt that the series, and this book especially, has dragged it's feet on letting him accomplish his dreams. even now, he doesn't evolve again until the very,*very* end, and even then it's not a full dragon. -1 star. but at least it's dragon shaped, if only considered a "Wyrm". + .5.

then, when he's finally a large, massive, quadrupedal reptile, he has to unlock a damn shaoeshifting ability, something to hide his "dragon" do he can keep being a draconian in public. -1 Star. again, at least it's expressed that it's not his real body, and he'll have to switch back, hopefully more often as the gets used to it (why does a dragon trapped in the wrong body need to get used to being Large and quadrupedal anyway?).

still, 3.5 stars. it's enjoyable but it's taking too long to pay off

This book does not get enough appreciation

One of my favorite series, this book has the most unique blends of magic and physics I have ever read. The story is fun, and there is a solid cast of characters. The challenges are leveled appropriately! Over all great story!

Great perspective from the monsters point of view

It is not every day that a book is written from but would normally be considered the nonplayer characters point of view. I really enjoy the journey of Sam Azar and his clutch mates on becoming an evolved species.

Best so far

As the third installment to the series, Magus of the North had a lot to live up to. It delivers!

For me, this is the best in the series so far. We really get a taste of the larger world and it's lost history. That knowledge not only opens up greater opportunities for the future, but closes a couple question marks of world. Obviously, I have no idea if Cale had it all planned out from the beginning or if this was something that came about over the course of writing this book, but it fits perfectly and doesn't bend the world's reality in any way.

But here's the five star thing: after this book, I see the end of Samazar's story and the beginning of dozens of others in this same world, and that makes me want to read more. A lot more. Specifically from Cale. That not only says a lot about an author, but speaks volumes about a single book.

For the things-that-could-be-better portion of my review, I can really only find that most of the book seems like random encounters rolled up in an RPG. Personally, I don't find this as much of a flaw as it would be in other books because Cale does such an excellent job of weaving them into a story. That said, I feel like there were some missed opportunities for all of them that could have expanded the book and the world at large. I would have loved to spend more time with each race as we met them. Some had a "this is how they met" part, others were "this already happened", especially at the beginning. Just giving me that would have been just that much better.

Another compelling book in the series

Cale Plamann moves the story along steadily and briskly, never languishing on temporizing dialog. The series takes on a multicultural atmosphere where Sam convinces several weaker species to join his burgeoning society to make his dream to build a society that could thrive and be secure. Since Sam is really the lynch pin that the society is dependent on, it seems like its continued existence will depend on him.

Looking forward to Book 4 of the series.
