Publisher's summary

I'm Harlow Evans. Shortly after my parents were murdered, I moved in with my Grandma. It meant switching schools, losing friends, and moving away from the only home I knew. All I wanted was to finish the school year hassle free. Switching seats on that first day altered my life. After surviving the loss of my parents I never thought anything could break me, but then he came into my life....

He wants to hurt me. Destroy me. Ruin me.

Tragedy brought me here, and a cruel twist of fate has me desperate to leave. There's also someone here that has me fighting to stay, though.

All my life I've lived in the shadows, trying to go unnoticed, until I met him...Malik Carter....

He's broody, quiet, and holding on to a dark past. From that first meeting I was drawn to him, his painfully gorgeous looks and model physique, but I also knew he was totally out of my league. He's the boy next door who, with his domineering personality, has somehow etched his way into my life.

When the Carter Brothers take it upon themselves to protect me from what's coming, I'm not sure whether to be relieved or shocked. You see, when a Carter brother loves, they love fiercely, strongly, and protectively. No one can get in their way. They're also used to getting what they want, even if it means getting hurt.

There's one thing you should know about the Carter brothers before you hear my story..... If you mess with one, you mess with them all.

Contains mature themes.

NOT A DUEL NARRATION!!

They could give a little heads up that there is only 1 chapter from the male POV. For someone like myself who bases their credit choices off primarily duel narration books, this was very misleading. Worth the credit? Sure. Only because Malik is a f***ing knock out. Also, are the brothers blind or just dense? Everybody and their mother knew who was harassing Harlow. She was even warned about the dude her first day. Yet every time something happens, Malik and his brothers seem to not have a clue who it could be. That was probably the most frustrating part. To put this in a category of 'protective alpha males' is not accurate. Protective? Sure. Did he do anything about it? NOPE. HAVOC Boys and Raleigh Rebels are much better reads with male main characters actually doing something about anyone hurting their women.

You’ll wanna Get (ur own) Carter..!

First book of the Carter boys series, Malik was not what I expected, but in a good way.
It reminded me of the Slater Bros series by L.a. Casey which I really enjoyed. If ur from U.S. like I am, it can be a little disorienting at first as these two series are set in U.K., the slang is much different as are many social customs. Once you get into it, which doesn’t take long the story is good.
Set in last year of highschool, the protagonist(s) r all ages 18 & older.
Harlow has just moved to new town, after her parents were murdered, and living with her only relative, a grandmother she doesn’t really know, Grams is fantastic by the way!
She’s a beautiful girl, unaware of her attractiveness being hypercritical of herself as she was picked on & severely bullied at her last school. Thinking something is wrong w/her or inclined to believe she’s “weird” and not realizing it’s jealousy spurring on hateful girls. At her new school after the move she is hopeful that her last yr of HS w/be quiet as she heals from her parents deaths. Nope. The very first day she has a run in w/a boy from a cruel & dangerous family, as well as one of the Carter boys, not knowing they are her neighbors yet.
Malik Carter is gorgeous (as are his four brothers) and she is drawn to him instantly. The bullying gets crazy, I mean, really really bad & the Carter boys end up being her “protectors” but nothing seems to stop an endless amount of cruelty. Yes, it’s hard to believe any of this happening w/out consequences especially in U.S. where “safe spaces” are provided (embarrassing but true) if you don’t like who is elected president. However, this is fiction so we suspend our beliefs a lot, lol. Malik and Harlow have chemistry, and the story moves at a great pace, there are some hot sexy scenes, and the end leaves room for the other Carter brothers books to expand on.
I would say this book is prob New Adult romance with the sex scenes & sensitive topics. However, at times has a YA feel in respects to the responses of female protagonist to her tormentors. I still really liked it and would suggest the following books I’ve listened to as similar (I only recommend ones I’ve loved listening to at best and really liked at worst)

❤️L. A. Cotton’s ‘Wicked Beginnings’
(Wicked Bay series)
❤️Chloe Walsh’s ‘Binding 13’
(Boys of Tommen series)
❤️Chloe Walsh’s ‘ Treacherous’
(book 1 Carter Kids series)
❤️ Siobhan Davis’s ‘Finding Kyler
(The Kennedy boys series)
❤️Colleen Hoover ‘Hopeless’
And my ALL TIME FAVORITE SERIES in this genre #youngadult #newadult #sexybrothers #alphamales #highschool/college/romance #bullybooks is......

❤️❤️❤️Tijan’s ‘Fallen Crest series”❤️❤️❤️

P.S. And all of Tijan other books ‘Ryan’s Bed’ reminded me most Malik

The narration is good but sometimes I had to back up 30 sec or so to distinguish who was speaking as she sometimes didn’t clarify with her voice like other narrators. I listened to this book at 1.25 speed, after starting off at 1.5 which was too fast but I rarely listen to audio books at regular speed no matter the narrator as seems too slow for me.

Frustratingly Unrealistic

I know drama is needed to make a story work but this author tried so hard it became ridiculous. The blatant abuse and bullying was so over the top it weakened the story. One incident after another with no real retaliation and a heroin who was weak and a little stupid. Then there was Davis who just kept getting away with physically harming this girl. This story line could have worked if the plot was a little stronger and the characters a little more developed. Add poor narration to the mix and all you get is fat waste of credit.
