About this listen

The dragonkin have returned, devouring the essences of those able to tame the Elements. Now Elwin must learn to survive in exile. As he searches for ways to use his innate powers without being destroyed by the dragons, Zarah and Feffer seek out secrets long hidden by the ancient magi. But the magi guard their secrets dearly, and have stepped from the shadows, using their Words of Power to wage war against the elementalists. With enemies everywhere, Elwin still must learn to master the Elements and save the people most dear to him.

A very rich and intertwined storyline that overlaps at the crescendo of the plot. Cant wait for the third one.

Why is this book called mastering the elements? There is no elements !!! In the first chapter dragons show up and have the ability to appear out of thin air to kill anyone who uses the elements! So all that about him being special in the first book about the only one who can use all elements is gone! The other side characters from the first book have changed and turned against him. The townspeople make no sense, they just start rioting and trying to kill the main character all the time and is so stupid and unrealistic it’s pathetic! Don’t buy this book, it’s a waste of time and money!

What a disappointment

Seems rushed.

Jax went from dyed-in-the-wool pacifist from By The Blade to hardened vigilante in this book with no gradation written between the two positions.

Elwin goes from Abaddon's "Bringer of Awakening, catch at all costs" to "meh, no longer of interest, let's move on".

Numerous encounters with NPC that are banal and of no consequence only adds words. All leading characters are settling into rolls that make them less interesting. Zara having command over the king's ship without having any naval skills was farcical. As was her ability to lift and carry an unconscious Feffer a long distance while in hot pursuit from attackers.

The decision to break the story into many small groups, each pursuing different goals makes for an unfocused set of adventures and, frankly, the story has changed dramatically from what had been established in the entertaining book 1.

Regrettably, I lost so much interest that I've decided to end it before even the halfway mark.
