About this listen

It's the last race of the season, the wheels are smoking, and the temperature is rising at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Alexandra Barnaby is NASCAR-driver Sam Hooker's race-day spotter, his eye-in-the-sky, telling him when to pass and when to let off the gas.

From her vantage point high above the grandstand, she's also seeing goings-on in the infield that will change her life: events that will lead to a stolen racecar hauler, a kidnapped Saint Bernard, a bizarre murder, some restless nights under the covers with Sam, and a reunion with super cigar roller Rosa Florez and the queen of wholesale fruit, Felicia Ibarra.

From Miami, Florida, to Concord, North Carolina, and back to Miami, this is an action-packed, multi-car pileup of shady dealings, stolen technology, drive-thru windows, and destruction of personal property. It offers everything you always wanted to know about righteous indignation, stealing an 18-wheeler, stashing a dead body, and sex in the fast lane.

Editorial reviews

C.J. Critt gives a high-octane performance in this NASCAR-based mystery featuring Alexandra "Barney" Barnaby. The second in the series has Barney and her race-car-driving sweetie, Sam Hooker, dealing with cheating, murder, and the kidnapping of Hooker's Saint Bernard, Beans. Janet Evanovich's wisecracking dialogue is well served by Critt. She's comfortable with comic timing and never misses an opportunity to make Evanovich's outrageous characters larger than life. While Barney won't make fans forget Stephanie Plum, this light mystery set around the grease pits of the racing world, especially as delivered by Critt, is sure to please.

good story

Great story. annoyingly loud music between parts. I wish it was removed completely from the book

Not as good as the first

I think Janet Evanovich is so funny and I really liked Metro Girl, the precursor to this book, but this one was just OK. It kept me interested and had some funny parts, but nothing great. If you are a fan of Evanovich, worth a listen. CJ Critt is a great narrator as well.

Could do without his hoaky accent

Amazing amount of twists and turns, some a little unbelievable. All in all it was a really fun listen with lot of giggles.

Just fine book

Not as good as original - sequel is too outrageous - but good for the 2 hour commute. Book is a tease - you are just waiting for the steam to hit between Sam Hooker and Barney - so you keep listening. Not the same as the Stephanie Plum series - but good nevertheless

Narrator

The damn music between chapters was very loud and disturbing, much louder than narration. Very disconcerting. I disliked it.

Love Alexandra

Loved this book as much as the first. I wish there were going to be more books (not comic books).

Another fun listen (NASCAR fan, or not)!

Not really necessary to have heard the first in this series (Metro Girl), but you may enjoy them more if you listen in order.
