About this listen

Chief Inspector Acton and Detective Sergeant Kathleen Doyle know firsthand how the administration of justice can often follow a labyrinthine path. As they pursue a self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner, Acton's own questionable methods may prove his undoing.

The notoriety of being married to the enigmatically brilliant Lord Acton presents its own challenges as newly promoted Detective Sergeant Doyle contends with a series of homicides that seem to point to a vigilante killer. The victims are all criminals who eluded justice - until they ran afoul of an avenger whose modus operandi is a bullet to the back of the head. The key to the vigilante's identity lies in connecting the cold cases and searching for an event that may have triggered retribution after all these years - a daunting task.

Meanwhile Doyle finds herself shadowed by a mysterious figure. After the man steps forward to rescue her from harm, she wonders why he is invested in protecting her. But when she learns he's in contact with Acton's nemesis, she fears she's being used in a plot against her husband, whose personal code of justice has the potential to put his reputation - and his life - at risk.

For his own part, Acton must outmaneuver an unscrupulous reporter being fed information from someone within the ranks of Scotland Yard. The stakes are high, and both Doyle and Acton must work independently to outwit the players before their lives are brought crashing down like a house of cards.

In a lot of ways I like this series and it's characters. The Inspector/Baron is obsessed with his wife. They have sex anywhere, any time.He has the alarming tendency to kill anyone who threatens her. As he was quite the catch and she took him off the market, she gets threatened a lot. A policeman murdering people? A couple playing mind games and keeping secrets? I had to quit this book part way through as I wanted to murder both of them. Perhaps it's catchy?

Marcella Riordan's spot-on performance made this already nail-biting tale of suspense literally jump from its pages. Not only was I unable to put the book down when I was READING it, but Marcella's spot-on rendering of the spirit of suspense and intrigue coupled with her skill at capturing the spirit and complexity of each character made LISTENING to the story just as on-the-edge-of-your-chair exciting, if not even more so, even though I already knew the ending. I have every intention of re- listening many times to this extraordinary audio version of an extraordinary "on paper" story. Kudos to both Ms. Cleeland and Ms. Riordan .... and many, many thanks for hours of unparalleled pleasure.

Spectacular story; outstanding performance

A little too slow in story line but still good!
Not the best writing in terms of developing a real mystery story.

Good but not the best

A little more angst than I wanted (I want to protect Doyle, too), but well written. Wondering where Ms. Cleeland will go with this. Looking forward to the next installment.

Good progression in the series

What made the experience of listening to Murder in Hindsight the most enjoyable?

I think it was the reader. She infused life into the characters, and changed her voice appropriately. This book was a pleasure to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

The nice blend of romance and mystery. Good plotlines that kept you interested.

Which character – as performed by Marcella Riordan – was your favorite?

Doyle!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it kept me interested and I couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

Any additional comments?

A great listen. Some readers aren't able to switch from one character to another seamlessly, or they don't do male/female voices well, but Marcella Riordan did a splendid job.

Loved the quirky characters

Thoroughly enjoyed this good old fashioned murder/mystery reading. The characters were well chosen and the narration was very good.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I'd rather say that I really liked two previous books in the series, thanks to twisted plot, well developed detective line, intriguing relationships and unusual characters. But this one not so much.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I wish it would be more dynamic, less predictable, and the main character... well, I would like to see her acting more like a professional detective with special gift rather than damsel in distress with absolutely erratic behavior.
Really hope that the next book will get back on trail and again will bring us all intrigue and excitement of first two books in the series.

Did Marcella Riordan do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I'm not a native English speaker and I admit that I couldn't appreciate all sorts of pronunciations but I have to say that sometimes Marcella Riordan interpretation of book's characters sounded to me annoying and distracting, especially when she spoke as the main character Detective Sergeant Kathleen Doyle. I didn't really paid it a lot of attention before as the plot of previous books completely captured me, but this time it just added negative emotion to the whole picture.

Not the best one in the series

Liked the story line but Riordan was a little off her game this time. I'm hoping there will be more by this team of Cleeland and Riordan.

A Little Lacking

The stories and the reader are delightful. The plot twists are loads of fun. I can definitely recommend this series.
