What was I thinking letting my ex-husband, Jake live with me...and my new husband?
Things have been great with my new husband, Kyle. Until I accidentally say Jake’s name during the worst possible time. Okay...it’s more like I moan his name at the wrong time. And now Kyle thinks I still have feelings for my ex. Did I mention that Kyle and Jake are best friends?
Of course I care about my strong and sexy ex, Jake. He’s a huge part of my life. But how could I still be in love with him after what he did? Especially since Kyle is so sweet and secure.
I have to admit, things with Jake and I weren't always so bad. Maybe you can help me figure it out. What do you think? Do you want to hear how I got myself into this mess?
My Two Husbands is a love triangle dramady told in an alternating timeline. You’ll discover how Natalie’s past rivals her present. And in the end, you’ll get to choose which husband is her best match. If you love humor, heat, and piña coladas, then you’ll absolutely adore Natalie, Kyle, and Jake’s story.

My biggest issue with this is the back and forth in time. Just as a scene is getting good....it stops and we go back in time to a scene from her past. I am not a fan of this unless it smooth transition and done few are far between. I understand why the author does this but it’s not a favorite way of mine. On the other hand she did keep me interested so I guess she did her job well.
The Epilogue Is different. I see what the author is doing. Making sure everyone gets their happily ever after. I struggle to make a dinner decision let along decide who get Natalie. I favor each man for different reasons.
This is my first book by this author. I story was compelling enough and kept my interest. The characters were wonderful although it was a weird situation. I listened to this on audio and Erin Mallon narrates the quirky story. She does a wonderful job and I enjoy listening to her.
A different way to look at things....

I had a tough time liking or connecting with any of the characters. I felt like Nat was totally flaky and the guys... well... I just didn't really feel much for either of them. It was really hard to like Nat when she couldn't take a stand on anything and I really didn't feel for her with any of her dilemmas, mostly because she caused them.
The relationship between the "best friends" was a bit strange and it seemed like, again, it was pretty superficial. It seemed like they both used Nat as a go between so they never had to address anything with each other. You'd think if they were best friends, they'd talk and have established lines in the relationships. But they don't and she gets stuck. It just seemed like communication was sorely lacking all around.
While I liked the concept of choosing the ending, I didn't like either ending. Maybe because the events leading up to the endings just seemed to be too much to me.
This was certainly not the worst book I've ever listened to, but it just really fell flat for me. The story line and set up seemed so promising, but just wasn't executed that well.
Not sure where the comedy was

I think I would have liked it more had it not been sold as a comedy. It is a cutesy story with a serious edge. I mean there’s no happy ending here. 2 best friends one girl. The way this is done it isn’t funny.
I don’t know how laugh out loud it is

My Two Husbands is a standalone and went along rather swiftly. Yes, I listen at 1.5 speed, but also because the story wasn't that long. It took me by surprise and I ended up listening to a large chunk of it in one session. I was expecting to laugh a lot and I did in places, but the book ended up not being a simple fluffy comedy.
The gist of it is Natalie is now married to her ex-husband's best friend who had first crack at her and lost her after the first date, but was around when things got bad in her marriage and was there with her to pick up the pieces. Oh, and her Ex is living in the apartment above their garage and is still her husband's best friend. Is it weird that they all get along? she wonders and doesn't think so, knowing what lots of people are imagining about this arrangement. Then she had to go and say the wrong man's name in an intimate moment with her husband right after her ex announces he's got a new job and is ready to move out. Now, its awkward. Natalie has some soul-searching to do.
The author's writing was light and wry. There was a fun and flirty feel to it that made it easy to listen. It's not a deep story, but engaging nonetheless. It had a couple features in the story structure. One was that the story was told with short flashbacks between the current timeline scenes to bring the reader up to speed on how things got where they did. But, its something of a choose your own adventure ending where the reader got to decide the outcome because there is an alternate ending after the first one. That was different and took me by surprise.
Yeah, this turned into a story that unsettled me more than a light romcom should and I think the alternate ending was one of the big culprits. I might have done better with the love triangle trope, though its never been a favorite, if the story had committed to one direction or the other.
After some thought, I've concluded that like and dislike for this one will vary from listener to listener (reader) depending on your own experiences or trope preferences. Some are going to find the alternate ending a really cool device and love getting to see how the love triangle plays out with both scenarios.
Speaking of the love triangle trope. I'll be the first to admit that I run from those so take my reaction with a grain of salt. The book doesn't hide the fact that the triangle is central to this story so I went in knowing one of my least favorite tropes was at the heart of things.
But, I can't honestly say that my usual reason for hating the trope was entirely at fault. I'm not a fan, but yet, I was pulled into this story anyway. I kept shaking my head over these people and particularly Nat. This was a hot mess and they all caused it. I was curious to see how it was all going to shake out in the end.
Yes, Nat was pretty much in love with two men even after the past since Jake turned his life around and she couldn't let go of either. However, there was also ample evidence that those men were not best friends though they claimed it. Kyle should have never been close to Nat until things were good and done with Jake and Jake should have never moved into that loft of his ex and his best friend. Then, all three of them were in denial together until denial couldn't work any more and we have this part of their story.
So, there are some cool and fun aspects. It has some summery vibes with the cruise ship segment. But, the alternate ending options with the love triangle trope jarred me. Again, I think that it will be a riot for others and fun times will ensue though there are some deep heartfelt moments that come out because Nat struggles with having a baby and had miscarriages. It wasn't a fluffy one and had some good layers to it.
As to narration, Erin Mallon killed it as usual. I've enjoyed her work since the first book and many since. She does well with that wry voice of a heroine who is facing something tough. Both genders sound well as does pace, catching the tone of the writing and specific scenes. She raises the enjoyment of any book she performs.
I would recommend this one for those who are good with love triangles and who like contemporary romances with a strong comedy element.
