About this listen
Land a lighthouse deal to catapult your startup over the chasm of early adopters and into the land of new opportunities with trillion-dollar companies. Navigate to the Lighthouse explains how to do that, using strategic business development as a competitive advantage.
When you approach the chasm and look at lighthouses shining on potential trajectory-changing deals, two questions likely cross your mind: Should I invest the time and resources to pursue what seem like impossible deals? If so, what’s the path to get there—strategically and tactically?
Kurt Davis has the answers. He’s gone through the journey, and now he wants to share his hard-earned knowledge with you. He breaks the process down into three parts: Chart Your Course, Galvanize Your Crew and Maneuver Strategically, and Land the Deal and Expand. Master these and you’ll be on your way to landing the lighthouses and building an enduring business.
Don’t take just his word for it. Navigate to the Lighthouse includes contributions from more than 20 tech investors and executives from Apple, PayPal, Microsoft, Sony, DocuSign, Adyen, Bill.com, Boku, Uber, Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures, Index Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and more.

In fact, he studied history in college and landed his first job as a detention room supervisor for a local high school (this wasn’t part of the plan, either). When his Google query, “how to make money online,” directed him to digital marketing courses, Chris found his calling. Soon his own sites ranked number one for “double chin,” “stained concrete,” and “acai fruit.” The rest, as they say, is history.

Story
People don't buy from people they like. No! Your buyer doesn't care about you or your product or service. It's not your job to overcome objections, it's your buyer's. Closing isn't a skill of good salespeople; it's the skill of weak salespeople. Price isn't the main reason salespeople lose the sale. Gap Selling shreds traditional and closely held sales beliefs that have been hurting salespeople for decades. For years, salespeople have embraced a myriad of sales tactics and belief systems that have unknowingly created many of the issues they have been trying to avoid.

Why do some always seem to win while others always seem to fail? And why do others win and then fail to maintain their spot at the top? Is it luck? Not to spoil the contents of this book, but no…it isn’t. To see consistent success in your own business, you're going to have to turn the magnifying glass on yourself. Because the fact is, nothing you do—no action you take, no strategic financial decision you make—matters if it doesn't bring you closer to the things you really want. So how do you ensure that you can ultimately reach (and fund) your priorities?

Imagine what Atari might have achieved if Steve Jobs had stayed there to develop the first massmarket personal computer. Or what Steve Case might have done for PepsiCo if he hadn't left for a gaming start-up that eventually became AOL. What if Salomon Brothers had kept Michael Bloomberg, or Bear Stearns had exploited the inventive ideas of Stephen Ross? Scores of top-tier entrepreneurs worked for established corporations before they struck out on their own and became self-made billionaires.

Based on an acclaimed professor's legendary strategy course at Harvard Business School, The Strategist offers a radically new perspective on a leader's most vital role. "Are you a strategist?" That's the first question Cynthia Montgomery asks the business owners and senior executives from all over the world who participate in her highly regarded executive education course. It's not a question they anticipate, but by the time the program ends, they cannot imagine leading their companies to success without being - and living the role of - a strategist.

Insights and tactics simply not available anywhere
'Navigate to the Lighthouse’ is a very enjoyable book. The author Kurt Davis has interspersed lot of perspectives from seasoned investors, senior executives, sales professionals, co-workers and clients which allows for him to provide a wide variety of real life actual insights and 'how to be most prepared' in modern day Sales and Business development.
Insights in this book is like looking at the same fish bowl from different angles, and forming different opinions with nuances.
All business professionals should read this book to give their mindset an Uplift and an added advantage in the field over the next person. In business or in life, 'Failing to plan is Planning to fail'. And this book is another tool in the armoury to plan methodically not just at the mindset level, but also at various tactical levels. Outlook and introspection like this is gold dust for the readers.
It’s engaging and easy on the eye. My personal favourite is Part 3: Land and Expand and methodical planning on how to achieve this objective.
I would Highly Recommend this book for everyone, but especially for anyone who is a modern day Founder, CEO, Sales professional, Business Development executive, or a leader in their own industry.

Just get it.
This book doesn't entirely overlap with my business model but it is already useful for some of the clients I've worked with when talking about their products. Even if you're not a SaaS or service provider of any sort, there is still a lot of things that you can pull from for inspiration. Maybe you don't want to go global, but there are definitely tips and realistic expectations around landing big deals. Specifically, for me, it codified what acceptable struggle looks like and what progress towards success looks like. I'll tell you right now, that took a load off my mind.
There were some noticeable things in the audio, like different quality where they had to post edit the narration, but overall, the speakers were well spoken and enjoyable to listen to.
