“I don't belong in the military. I don't want to belong.”

Tanner Malone never aspired to heroism. For him, the Navy and the Debtor’s War were all about survival. Lately, his life has turned to better days with college, friends, and a growing relationship. He’s not interested when a Union Fleet admiral brings him a mysterious alien threat, but he can’t turn away Alicia Wong.

Ancient warfare between humanity’s alien neighbors threatens to reignite. While tensions rise, the Fleet detects a massive alien craft sneaking through human space. The commando team sent to investigate is tough, competent, and straight out of Tanner’s worst fears. Surviving this will push Tanner to his limits—and he’ll definitely need a note for class.

The story is awesome as expected from EK. Tanner Malone is one of my favorite characters of all time. The previous books were narrated by the same guy and I liked it. This time he did a good chunk of it in a half whisper that was just plain weird. Definitely broke immersion and was down right annoying much of the time. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Love this series

If I have a complaint at all, it’s that the books don’t just magically appear every 6 months or once a year…that said, Mr Kay always delivers the best, so I am content to wait. These characters matter to me as do their lives and I have re-listened to both of his series several times. Please keep up the great work Elliot Kay, and thank you for so many hours of enjoyment.

An author who consistently gets even better!

This is a great book, however whoever made this creative choice to narrate like some sort of gritty romance novel needs poked in the eye.

great book. narration?!

There's a bit of a dip in the action about 2/3 through, but it all pays off at the climax.

I'll listen to this entire series again next year. I didn't have time to go through it all before No Man's Land dropped.

I love this series

This is a great addition to the series. Fun and interesting listening experience. This book flows well into the series and adds many new characters and stories to the series. Thank you for the book, I really enjoyed it.

Truly great!

Was magenta a creature that "contained" multiple aliens in one body? The author refers to magenta as they or them repeatedly. was there some explanation I missed or is it just a strange word choice for an individual that the author used? it had me scratching my head for sure. Otherwise the book was very good.

good story, some confusing unexplained details

The story was great. Another fun adventure with Tanner Malone where trouble seems to follow him but he somehow manages to save the day and screw up someone's plans. My biggest problem with this audiobook was the narration. I should have read the other reviews and paid attention. The narrator literally whispers the entire novel. The dialogue bits are normal but the narration bits that are supposed to be neutral are all done in a whispered voice. At first it wasn't that bad, though I kept wondering if it was because the characters were in a tense situation or needed to be stealthy (they weren't). After awhile, this narration style really gets annoying. I almost couldn't focus on listening to the story.

Great Story BAD narration

I have no idea of the variety and quality of intoxicants that convinced someone to change the tone of the narration. However I am convinced it would astound a freshman dorm or lower enlisted barracks.

This like if Mike Rowe suddenly started doing dramatic voice overs. If the production team thinks this was a good idea they need to share whatever they are using.

But I listened all the way through for three reasons.

I rarely felt as seen and heard as a veteran as when I listen to this series.

I have a horrible and addictive fiction crush on Jessie and Gunny makes me miss my first 1SG in a warm and painful way.

Finally this is the only series that has universal positive reception with everyone I force to listen to it.

The narration messes with all that. But I still gave it four stars overall. One hopes that they enforce sobriety on the production team before another book comes out, or at least send samples of what they are on with the book.

Sharing is caring.

Whose idea was the narration change?

i never get tired of seeing that there's a new book by Elliot Kay. Every one of them has been a home run in my opinion. This one is no different.

I love this series.

I read this book a while back and got the audiobook for a long car drive. I enjoyed the story greatly and wanted to revisit it.
Within the first few minutes I thought something was wrong. The narrator, who is the same through the whole series, has changed their style significantly. Dialogue is still given in various character's voices, but everything else is a strange half-whisper. I think it was an effort to more clearly distinguish dialogue from narration, but the implementation falls really flat. The half-whisper feels like a really bad attempt at a seductive voice that some males use and it gives the entire feel of the book a bad vibe.
I don't know if the author approved of this change or it was the publisher's choice or what, but this narration should not have been the final version.
Book was unlistenable and I couldn't finish it. I skipped around and the half-whisper problem persists through the epilogue.

Great Story and Unbearable Narration
