About this listen

One thousand years after Earth was destroyed in an unprovoked attack, humanity has emerged victorious from a series of terrible wars to assure its place in the galaxy. But during celebrations on humanity’s new homeworld, the legendary Captain Pantillo of the battle carrier Phoenix is court-martialed then killed, and his deputy, Lieutenant Commander Erik Debogande, the heir to humanity’s most powerful industrial family, is framed for his murder. Assisted by Phoenix’s marine commander Trace Thakur, Erik and Phoenix are forced to go on the run as they seek to unravel the conspiracy behind their captain’s demise, pursued to the death by their own fleet. What they discover about the truth behind the wars and the nature of humanity’s ancient alien allies will shake the sentient galaxy to its core.

Slow start but good

Narrator does a good job but his voice is more suited to medieval fantasy, he gives almost everyone in the beginning of the book a sort of lofty upper class British accent that makes it sound like a bunch of snobs at the yacht club arguing over whose servants are the laziest.
It took awhile to get into the book because there was so much background to establish before the real action starts but by the end, is eager to start book two which is downloading right now

A great start to a new exciting series!

it's a little bit slow starting but it picks up fast with non-stop action. A great addition to space sci-fi series.

Great the boys and I loved it.

Delivered well we took 4 days to listen. Each day we kept wondering which way the story would go, and each day we were maybe 10% on the right track. The characters are well developed and their actions are thoroughly described, with vivid imagery. Best one yet.

Solid choice

I've only read the first book, but so far it seems as tho it's going to be a solid choice. In a genre that has very similar premises, Spiral Wars carves out a little niche for itself.

I liked it.

Great Military Space Opera

I found Joel Shepherd through his Cassandra Kresnov series - highly recommended - and that led me to this series. Shepherd is an Australian author and the difference in syntax, speech patterns, and cultural differences show up clearly in his writing. Paired with an excellent narrator, the result is an entertaining mixture of military sci fi, political intrigue, and a bit of a mystery that keeps you intrigued even though a lot of Hornblower-esque tropes appear. I thoroughly enjoyed this first volume and am eagerly devouring the sequel.

What a great ride.

Excellent story with wonderful narration. My only criticism is the almost bewildering number of species that all breathe oxygen and none that do not. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Excellent series, don't mind negative reviews

This review is for the whole Spiral Wars series, not just the first book. When I've read the review about "politics," I've added this book to my wish list and pretty much forgot about it. Facing the "silence of the road" a year or so later, I've decided to give it a try. And I'm glad I did.
The story is exciting and evolving in every book. Obvious facts become questionable, and then just plain wrong, as the story progresses.
The "alien politics" are an essential part of this series. It holds the story together and helps understand the cause and effect of everything happening in the story. I was afraid that current politics and social views would find its way and ruin the story, but that never happened. At least not in the "in your face" way that some other books do. For that, I thank the author. Also, it adds depth to the story. Perhaps, the fact that the author has a degree in political science may have something to do with it.
A word about John Lee (the narrator): I've listened to several books narrated by him and grew to dislike his narration. To me, he sounds too pompous. That said, he is perfect for this series. Despite my initial doubts, I have very much enjoyed his narration here.
Overall - this is a five stars series. Give it a try, and you won't be disappointed.

Narrator takes some getting used to

John Lee is a great narrator, but his speed, cadence, and tendency to flow directly from scene to scene without so much as a pause or shift in tone definitely takes getting used to. This is the second or third book I've heard him read, and I still have to follow much more closely than any other narrator to catch the scene changes and keep up.
