Publisher's summary

When Tom Chantry comes west to buy cattle, he quickly runs into trouble. During a drunken scuffle in a bar, Dutch Akin challenges Chantry to a gunfight. Leaving town rather than face Akin, Chantry is quickly branded a coward.

Later, when hiring men to take his herd to the railroad, Chantry faces a dilemma: No one wants to make the long, dangerous ride with a leader of questionable courage. So when French Williams, a shrewd and ruthless cattleman, makes Chantry an offer, Tom reluctantly accepts his unusual terms: Tom must remain with the drive from start to finish. If he fails to do so, the entire herd will belong to French.

Tom quickly learns that life is not going to be made easy for him. The first man French hires is Dutch Akin.

cattle drive from hell

The lead character is quite a man as usual but in the story he uses his mind and his fists he’s not to be taken lightly. We got the bad guys are unseen and hard to pin down lotta twists and turns what a great book

Just Deserves

When people act greedily and rashly there are often dire consequences. The fact that Chantry was able to get past revenge and go on with life was good.

interesting premise, mediocre delivery

This book features a character type that Lamour uses occasionally, but never till now for the protagonist: the easterner who's offended by the wildness of the West. Interesting to see how he learns to embrace the roughness the country demands, but a bit irritating in the process, maybe less well written than usual. Glad I listened, but it's one of the few LL's I probably won't re-read.
