About this listen

Their marriage lasted only slightly longer than the honeymoon - to no one's surprise, not even Bryony Asquith's. A man as talented, handsome, and sought after by society as Leo Marsden couldn't possibly want to spend his entire life with a woman who rebelled against propriety by becoming a doctor. Why, then, three years after their annulment and half a world away, does he track her down at her clinic in the remotest corner of India?

Leo has no reason to think Bryony could ever forgive him for the way he treated her, but he won't rest until he's delivered an urgent message from her sister - and fulfilled his duty by escorting her safely back to England. But as they risk their lives for each other on the journey home, will the biggest danger be the treacherous war around them - or their rekindling passion?

Skillful, unusual, and hot

When I’m in the mood for an angsty romance, I go to either Natasha Anders or Sherry Thomas—and Sherry Thomas is the more psychologically astute and stylistically ambitious author. I’d been putting off this read, just because I sensed it would demand a little more concentration than the average lighthearted romance. This is five stars on the merits of perfect prose, well-integrated plot and character development (with fascinating and vivid descriptions of travel through Colonial India and the Swat uprising) and a credible story of people figuring out how to love each other despite extreme environments, both internal and external. The hero is very easy to love. The heroine is guarded and prickly, and it’s mostly her emotional unavailability that gives this romance its tension. The happily-ever-after is utterly convincing and hard won.—Didn’t love the narrator, but try to look past that. ;)

Story is ok but the voice..

I never ever reviewed audiobooks until today. The voice recording is horrible. The lack of emotion or just the way she speaks feels like she is not feeling the story at all. I downloaded the book and finished reading it like that. Waste of a credit

Not a light read/listen.

Story is rather dark and the characters face only adversity.
Turns out ok. Thankfully.
Narration is devoid of the correct emotion.

The performance

It seems as though everyone is rating this book due to Anne’s narration. However I would dare anyone who has listened to the Kushiel series (author: Jacqueline Carey) to say that she is an inadequate narrator. This is a voice actor that is perhaps slightly unconventional in tone, but makes up for in both perfect pronunciation and feeling. Do not let the reviews based on narration discourage you if you are actually interested in the plot line. (Which is also amazing, in case anyone was wondering)

Bittersweet.

A heart rending love story, amazing adventure, and toe curling love scenes. I am embarrassed to say I shed a tear or two.

It was delicious

It was sexy, heart wrenching, smart, and adventurous. It has a happy ending but wasn’t without thought.

The author is great… recording is meh

I’ve read several books by Sherry Thomas and her stories are captivating. I agree with so many reviews that mention how flat the narration is. I will say, it did help to speed it up to 1.2x but that really only helped me get through the story.

Beautiful second chance love story

One of my favourite books from Sherry Thomas ( together with “Private arrangements” and “Beguiling the beauty”)
Many reviewers put a lot of emphasis on a a “ sleep sex” and issue of consent between Bryony and Leo. In my opinion, this book is a historical romance and takes place in 1890 s, a lot of things were happening that are not acceptable for our modern sensibilities.... Do we need to sterilise everything and make it politically correct? The scenes work well within the story, it’s not forceful or ugly just two people desperately in love trying to find their way towards each other though misunderstandings and miscommunications ...

I also enjoyed Anne Flosnik narration, she is an acquired taste and sometimes tends to overact the story but in this case she did a beautiful job...
