About this listen

Following the success of If You Only Knew and On Second Thought comes the highly anticipated new novel by New York Times best-selling author Higgins - a funny and bittersweet story of a woman who returns to her hometown after a decade's absence hoping to resuscitate her relationship with her family, only to discover that her homecoming is not as welcome as she had imagined.

It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid and where some revelations about her family could either heal her or send her scrambling back to Boston on the next ferry.

Critic reviews

"The first-person point of view, coupled with a skilled narration by Xe Sands, immediately draws the listener into Nora Stuart's story.... Sands smartly voices the Maine accent of Nora's mother and other islanders. Sands has the listener laughing as she brings the comedic elements alive and pulls their heartstrings at the sad moments, both of which give the story rich dimension." (AudioFile)

Almost abandoned the book after a few minuts due to performance. Took me couple of chapters to get used to the way it has been presented. Not condusive to the easy listening- High-low of the voice, speeding up to the end of sentences with a croaky drawl finish, that Kardashian's "vocal fry". Not too classy reading, but liked the story...

nice story, challenging to listen though

Xe Sands makes every Kristan Higgins novel much better than if I had read the print version myself. I love how she adds so much humor, emotion, and vulnerability to each character. Don't get me wrong. Every Kristan Higgins novel is so well written. I adore them all. I just wanted to give a shout out to one of my favorite readers!

Xe Sands is the best reader!

I found myself finding tasks to do so I could keep listening without sitting still. I enjoyed the book and I did not think the “big bad event” ruined the book. I think it made it more believable and you could imagine Nora as a person you might meet someday who had lived through a bad event but survived and thrived. I liked the book and the narrator and I recommend this book.

I liked it and finished it in two days of listening

Some terrible and some feel good twists had me loving this book. After a successful woman experiences a horrendous event and a terrible accident in a short period of time, she know that she is in great need of, both physical and mental down time. She breaks it off with her almost (cheating) fiancé and takes a leave of absence from her job so she can return to her hometown where she is in hopes of getting some help from her mother. Upon her arrival she is met by her never changing hard hearted mother and her prickly teenage niece who is to be her un-receiving roommate.

Growing up she was always known as the gross smart girl and her sister was in the beautiful mean group. Things are quite different now as she is beautiful and successful and her sister is in jail. Some of her harmful past is still looming out there and rears it’s ugly head, but it may just be the path she needs to travel to get her out of her current circumstance and get her life back on course.

Great characters and story, Xe Sands’ narratives are always spot on and enjoyable. I loved the ending and would read more about these characters if there were a sequel, regardless I will be reading more of her books.

Loved it
