About this listen

Maggie Beaumont's luck is about to change. Sure, she's known for her bad romantic choices-her former boyfriend broke up with her by bringing his new girlfriend home for a visit. And then there was the crush she had on a gorgeous young Irishman, who turned out to be Father Tim, the parish's new priest. But romantic salvation has arrived in the form of handsome, if surly, fisherman Malone. It turns out there's a heart of gold underneath his barnacle-clad exterior. Will this catch of the day turn into the dish of a lifetime?

Perfect story/narrator combination

What made the experience of listening to Catch of the Day the most enjoyable?

The intonation of the narrator, she captured the humor the author intended.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Catch of the Day?

The day Maggie realized that Tim was the new priest in town.

Have you listened to any of Xe Sands’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No but I will soon. She's a talented narrator, I wish she narrated more of this author's books.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Maggie is used to putting her foot in her mouth but does she have faith that she'll take a step in the right direction and find love in her hometown?

Any additional comments?

This was such a great find. You won't be disappointed if you're looking for a book that will make you miss the characters as soon as it ends.

love the book!... narrator? not so much!

Any additional comments?

I do love Kristan Higgins's books and jumped when at least two were released in audio, but Sands's performance is a kill-joy. The narration is blasé and condenscending and not worth of the book - I'm released "Somebody to Love" was performed by another narrator.

Laughed and cried

I related so much with Maggie at the start of the book. Early 30s, Catholic, dating issues, etc. I laughed at her embarrassing episodes but cringed too, because they got to be too many at some point.

Cried about Colonel. Loved the descriptions of small town living. Fantastic storytelling.

Bit long with perhaps too many secondary and tertiary characters. Slut-shaming was constant and the big misunderstanding took a while to be resolved.

I also wish there was more to Maggie and Malone’s developing relationship. Malone was too quiet and his motivation for his actions were not fully explained because he wouldn’t talk.

As it is, this is more women's fiction (Maggie's coming into her own) than romance.

Funny and a great read

If you could sum up Catch of the Day in three words, what would they be?

This is my first book of Higgins and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was funny and very realistic. The main charactor remains me of some of my younger days. The narrator handles the female voices well but struggles to vary the male ones. All in all, I loved it and am now looking for another one by the author.

What did you like best about this story?

the variation of the male and female voices

Which character – as performed by Xe Sands – was your favorite?

Maggie by far

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end was great

Any additional comments?

All in all a great read

Slow Slow Slow Moving

This book starts out painfully slow both in character development and plot. I stuck with it hoping it would pick up speed but it never really did. I stuck with it to the end and the pace did pick up a bit towards the end. This book is certainly not commensurate with her other books. I loved the Blue Heron series, this one not so much. Not sure I will listen to the other two books. I gave the narrator three stars only because of her wide variety of dialects, and capturing the Maine dialect especially. However her portrayal of the main character, I thought, missed the mark. Except for rare moments, the main character sounded whiny and pretty much pathetic throughout the book.

Long and silly.

Not my favorite of Kristan Higgins books. Found the main characters difficult to like. Maggie, silly and Malone, who has a fleeting part in this long, tedious story, really did not add much. Narrator did a great job, the rest was just “snore”.

Made me laugh!

Again Kristin Higgins nails human emotions, crazy stories we tell ourselves, and the foibles we make because of all 3, in a way hat made we chuckle!

Xe Sands, great job! The way she lowers and softens her voice to portray the man or men who attract her adds emphasis to the situations and makes me smile.

Slow to get going and quick to end

There were some good parts to the story and I did have a few tears, but I spent the first 3 or more hours getting tired of Maggie and how hard she was on herself…it got REALLY long waiting for her love interest. Then, we finally get him for a short period of time (but still not a lot), then lose him again, then boom he’s back and book ends. I wish there would have been more actual story with Maggie and Malone. They really drug out everything with Father Tim making it seem like there would be more story that never came….now it just seems like a lot of filler in the book that could have been better used.
