About this listen

"Elison’s brutal, incisive novel cuts to the heart of what makes public figures vulnerable and asks us to question our voyeurism." New York Times Book Review

She created a beautiful world. Now he wants it all.

On her way to a speaking engagement, bestselling novelist Eli Grey gets into a cab and accepts a drink from the driver, trusting that everything is fine. She wakes up chained in the stranger’s basement. With no close family or friends expecting her to check in, Eli knows she needs to save herself. She soon realizes that her abduction wasn’t random, and though she thinks she might recognize her captor, she can’t figure out what he wants. Her only clues are that he’s very familiar with her books and deeply invested in the fantastical world she creates. What follows is a test of wills as Eli pits herself against a man who believes she owes him everything—and is determined to take it from her.

Terrifying and timely, set against the backdrop of convention culture and the MeToo reckoning, Number One Fan unflinchingly examines the tension between creator and work, fandom and source material, and the rage of fans who feel they own fiction.

Just okay

This was rough to listen to. It may be better on paper. There were times it was confusing regarding dialogue going on within Eli’s head. The performance was good but the subject matter was really disturbing at times. Unsure I’d recommend this to a friend.

Viscerally real

The story felt like a tapestry of all the worst fears of American woman convention-goers. All the cautionary tales we've ever whispered amongst ourselves come to life.

Decent book

It was a good story but I felt like it was completely drawn out and I got board a few times. Ending was super easy to figure out which is kind of disappointing.

SO good!

Vivienne Leheny brought this story alive and made it feel viscerally real. I felt myself even holding my breath at one point. Zero regrets

What a ride!

We all get into ride share app’s. Independent people move freely with no one watching. Or do we?!?!?!? Strong female lead. SmartLy written. Modern day details. Vivid and intense!

Spooky, gripping, great read

This is a gender-bend of “Misery” with several other fun modern surprises. It’s terrifying because it’s believable. Not for fans who don’t like suspense, but I found myself gripping the steering wheel several times while listening to this one, and this isn’t normally my genre. Narrator is PERFECT.

Blah

That was hard to get through. Seriously, who writes the reviews!!? This book is a modern day spin on Stephen King’s Misery but definitely no where near as good. The story was drawn out and in no way did it keep me hooked as of course the ending was so predictable! I only stuck with it because I paid my one credit!! Not scary!, not intense!, just someone writing a book after reading Misery. Also, her cringe hate of men came through quite a lot! As a sister, wife, & mother NOT all men are bad!

Couldn’t finish this one.

Boring rendition of Steven King’s Misery. The narrator was ok, but she didn’t have much to work with. Way too much detail about the un-relatable book Eligh was writing. Skip this one.

Nasty and overwrought

Audible should be ashamed not to have rejected this scabrous screed at first reading. It's the worst book I've ever regretted buying
