About this listen
Tell me your secrets, I’ll tell you no lies - but not everyone will survive.
Meredith finds himself stuck between the Russian Mafia and the Secret Intelligence Service. But whose side has he chosen? His team are investigating a series of horrific murders involving the Russians, and are beginning to question where his loyalties lie. Even Patsy Hodge has her doubts.
Hodge is working on an assignment that appears to be safe and boring. When she discovers there is a connection to the Russians, her relationship with Meredith places her in danger.
Has Meredith overplayed his hand? The secrets and lies are mounting up and not everyone will get out alive.
One Secret Too Many is the fifth book in the Meredith and Hodge series. If you like great story telling, surprising plot twists, and compelling characters, then you are ready to meet Meredith and Hodge.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Meredith and Hodge are a force on all fronts
MK Turner has done it again with this Meredith and Hodge book. These two people get mixed up in all kinds of intense criminal and personal intensity that it is impossible to put it down once you start and that being said waiting for the next book to be published gets more difficult with each new book. This is the best foreign crime series I have encountered in a long time. It just keeps growing and with each new twist. One Secret Too Many has more twists than Tin Soldiers yet as a reader I never get lost. It is just impossible to put the book down. The twists that ultimately take place at the conclusion of this novel were a bit surprising to say the least. It is nice that Lee Beddow has narrated this whole series to this point. The voice he gives each character is so unique and totally believable. Although these can be read as stand alone novels I would encourage any reader to start at the beginning.

Great Characters
There was so much going on in this book that I felt lost at times. I liked it better when Meredith and Hodge were not working undercover. Lee Beddow is an excellent narrator, but I think I missed some details with the audio version. I would've been able to follow the plot better if I'd read it myself. Although this wasn't my favorite, I still love the series and the characters, and I was glad that Peggy made another appearance.

Complicated
I have to say this book irritated me. It's not that both Hodge and Meredith are working undercover, it's that no one at all trusts one another! Meredith gets blackmailed and Hodge's first reaction is to think he's cheating on her; Meredith is going behind his team's back and answering to people other than through the normal channels and his team don't trust him enough to basically do their jobs without wondering what Meredith is doing, and they are trying to help the bad guys rather than Meredith. I understand that they are working with incomplete data all around. Patsy is working for the big guys - government, whatever, so wouldn't she expect Meredith to trust her if she looked like she was compromised!? I honestly wanted to slap everyone in the book.
I suppose, what all this means is, M.K. Turner has done an excellent job at making us care for the characters in the book, and become invested in their stories, since she invokes that sort of reaction in this reader at least. There are some surprising twists, and still some slap upside the head moments in this.
This is a complicated plot of revenge and spying and double crossing that leaves you guessing until the end.

gorey
This has a great deal of graphic intense gorey scenes, that I personally could do without. Too much detail in that sense. Secrets are revealed and the last one is a real gut punch!!! I've disliked Patsy most of the last book and this one , because she's quick to lay blame on Meredith and believesthe worst. Where's the trust, if you care for someone you give them the benefit of the doubt??? The last bombshell still has me reeling and processing it. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life.
