About this listen

The highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times best-selling thriller everyone is talking about, One of Us Is Lying! There's a new mystery to solve at Bayview High, and there's a whole new set of rules.

Come on, Bayview, you know you've missed this.

A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up since Simon died, but in the year since the Bayview four were cleared of his shocking death, no one's been able to fill the gossip void quite like he could. The problem is no one has the facts.

Until now.

This time it's not an app, though - it's a game.

Truth or Dare.

Phoebe's the first target. If you choose not to play, it's a truth. And hers is dark.

Then comes Maeve, and she should know better - always choose the dare.

But by the time Knox is about to be tagged, things have gotten dangerous. The dares have become deadly, and if Maeve learned anything from Bronwyn last year, it's that they can't count on the police for help. Or protection.

Simon's gone, but someone's determined to keep his legacy at Bayview High alive. And this time, there's a whole new set of rules.

And don't miss Two Can Keep a Secret, Karen's third "must-read YA thriller" (Bustle)!

Loved it!!

I downloaded One of Us is Lying a few years ago when it first came out on Audible. I loved it so much that I listened to it multiple times and later bought the physical copy. When I heard there was a sequel, I was very excited and I can say One of Us is Next did not disappoint. I loved seeing the original Bayview 4 as well as Maeve and some new characters with equally interesting stories. I will admit that the culprits of both books were somewhat predictable, but the ending left me speechless. I also appreciate the LGBT representation as a member of that community.

Exactly What a Sequel Should Be

I absolutely loved the first Bayview High book, “One of Us is Lying”, and naturally I had high hopes about the sequel, “One of Us is Next”, which I listened to months after the first. Overall I would say I was highly pleased with this book, however, there were a few things that made me feel a little shifty, mostly in its ending. It doesn’t have exactly full resolution like the first book does, but in hindsight, that’s probably a good thing.

The book really builds off the first book really well, and yet it keeps things fresh. It doesn’t repeat the same tropes as the first. While the first book brought on a few twists to the whodunnit genre, this one took a few twists and turns to how the first book was handled altogether. Building off the same tone and style and world as the first installment and adding new fresh elements is exactly how a sequel should be, in my opinion, and that is ultimately why I rate this five stars like the first.

The book grabbed me right from the start, unlike the first which took a little time to wrap my head around. It can be uneasy without the original Bayview 4 characters since we have new narrators this time around, but fortunately, the author made the perfect choice to use a familiar face. Bronwyn’s sister Maeve was easily the best character in the first book, so her upgrade to being one of the main characters for the second was more than ideal, and we get a lot of looks into her head as an insecure former cancer patient, threatened by the idea of a failed relapse. She’s different from Bronwyn in a good way, as are the other two characters and her relationship with them both.

We’re down to three main characters instead of four, tightening the story up a bit. The original Bayview Four was under pressure to enter each other’s lives, but these three bonded naturally and under some pretense of disconnect as well. I also love that the Bayview Four also have a presence in this book as well, not just one off cameos, they are real characters in this book but so much that they don’t get in the way of development of the new characters.

I also like Phoebe and Knox. I wasn’t sure how new they were or if they were in the first at all. He had a previous relationship with Maeve, which put him in an interesting position, but Phoebe was the odd one out, making the reader question why she’s so important...until you realize she is actually the main-main character. Not Maeve, what you’d expect after it turned out Bronwyn was the ultimate main character from the first.

Book book really plays off the readers expectations, especially after reading one of us is lying. The game is entirely different, it’s one were you legitimately don’t know what event will happen next, rather than what will happen to a specific character. I won’t spoil anything but the main culprit is not who you would think, nor are they anyone under your nose such as the trope goes in which the author previously followed. However, I will say that well it’s unclear if this is because it goes off trope, or if the ending is quite an abrupt twist without as much resolution, The ending did make me feel a little uneasy and it’s one of those endings where I’m not exactly sure how to wrap my head around it. To be completely honest though, i’m almost glad the author did make me feel that. Books that subvert my expectations, especially a sequel, which has a lot of things going against it, like the challenge to not retread or feel out of place, are books that I love and after reading this sequel, I’ve come to realize Karen M. McManus is a genius.

Not often can I attribute a book’s greatness to an author’s writing style, mostly because I can never be sure if it’s the book itself or the authors writing style, but here I can definitely tell it’s the author’s writing style. I love this series and what she’s done, I will recommend it to people even if they aren’t the high school target audience, I really hope she writes more, and I especially hope when eventually these novels make the leap to television, it will capture the same spirit of the series visually as it does on print.

A stunning sequel that lives up to its predecessor

I first read One Of Us Is Lying when it released in 2017, but I somehow forgot all the nuances that made it a great book. It was a great psychological drama that took me back to my high school days, where things were simpler, yet far more complicated and drama-soaked.

This follow-up, One Of Us Is Next, is even better than the original. Rather than starting with fresh people, this book expands on the lives of the characters from the first book. It seamlessly blends the best elements of One Of Us Is Lying in a devilish, witty manner without relying too heavily on the formula that preceded it.

The narrators were brilliant, especially Maeve, and the characters were realistic up to a certain point. Unfortunately, the third act fizzled a bit. The plot went from a tidy sequence and ended in a knotted-up mess.

The biggest issue I had with the book was how abruptly it ended. I wish it had further paved the way for the next (if there will indeed be a next book.) I was expecting a similar, neatly tied-up, ending that the first book provided and, though One Of Us Is Next has a shocking twist, the end was definitely rushed.

Despite its flaws, I’m really hoping that we’ll get a third in the One Of Us series. It feels like Bayview High isn’t finished with us quite yet, and I am really interested to learn what comes next.

A worthy sequel to One of Us is Lying!

I loved this audiobook! One of Us is Next is a worthy sequel to One of Us is Lying, with a good combination of mystery and romance. It also features main characters in One of Us is Lying (I was soooooo happy to hear about Browyn, Nate, Addie and Cooper again), as well as it’s own brand new characters! The ending was quite *cough* bazaar, and the fact that Emma and Phoebe would stick up for Owen like that just tears me up. I really loved this audiobook and hope that Karen McManus can write more novels, her style of writing is truly amazing!

Very Suspenseful

It was very suspenseful. I didn't give it 5 stars because some of the plot was predictable but it was still a great story!! I love these characters! The performance was fabulous!
