About this listen

*AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*

"This novel will be remembered as one of the best thrillers of the year." --Associated Press

"A shocking stunner in every way. The perfect thriller." --Robert Crais

When darkness closes in - he's your last, best hope. Evan Smoak returns in Gregg Hurwitz’s #1 international bestselling Orphan X series in Out of the Dark.

Taken from a group home at age twelve, Evan Smoak was raised and trained as part of the Orphan Program, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets - i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke with the Program, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man, a man who helps the truly desperate when no one else can. But now Evan's past is catching up to him.

Someone at the very highest level of government has been trying to eliminate every trace of the Orphan Program by killing all the remaining Orphans and their trainers. After Evan's mentor and the only father he ever knew was killed, he decided to strike back. His target is the man who started the Program and who is now the most heavily guarded person in the world: the President of the United States.

But President Bennett knows that Orphan X is after him and, using weapons of his own, he's decided to counter-attack. Bennett activates the one man who has the skills and experience to track down and take out Orphan X - the first recruit of the Program, Orphan A.

With Evan devoting all his skills, resources, and intelligence to find a way through the layers of security that surround the President, suddenly he also has to protect himself against the deadliest of opponents. It's Orphan vs. Orphan with the future of the country - even the world - on the line.

grabbed me and didn't let go

This story arc with the president has been absolutely wonderful. Greg's characters are compelling and well-rounded, but he never goes into the weeds with over development of characters. The story itself is tight and rapid fire. You definitely need to read the previous books in order for it to make sense.

Maybe Time for a New Narrator

Brick is good. I just don’t think he does well in this genre—the super spy/spec ops book. In the first 15 minutes, it was difficult to distinguish the characters from each other. They all sounded the same, and I had to restart it three times. Now, Brick narrating Harlan Coben—that’s a definite win.

On the book, I felt like it was the best Orphan X book in the series. And they are all great. I enjoy seeing Evan evolve socially in each book.

Without a doubt, worth your credit.

Another fabulous book

Mr. Greg Horowitz has captured a fabulous character. I can listen to the entire book in one day and forget about everything else it’s going on. May not be the best thing to do but I can’t put it down.

A Piece Of Quiet

Thanks for the great sale, l made the mistake of reading out of order as the reviews were soooo spread out. Narrator Scott Brick is Evan Smoak and the biggest reason l have purchased this series inc. short on Joey. This story is heartbreaking, heartwarming, and full of great revenge. Travon just makes you want to be a better person and Evan does his part to bring some frontier justice. All the supporting characters bring such color to the adventure eg Tommy. Love the adhesive bikini, Vera 2 and all the wonderful Vodka updates. I can’t wait for book 6.
If like me you read out of order, you get a different perspective of Evan, and l personally like skipping around the published order. Frankly it has been refreshing.
Were my comments of help?

Love the Characters in this Series

Read them all and missing my Evan fix. Every Character is brought to life and I enjoy looking forward to each encounter with the people that help this Nowhere man out. This last book took me through many emotions. And hated when it ended. Whens the next book????????????????????

Agent X does it again...

I've listened to all of the Agent X series and they've been great stories. Scott Brick does a great job and this genre is right up his alley. I've listened to a few other Gregg Hurwitz books outside of the Agent X series and they have left me feeling....MEEH...nothing special.
I'm starting to get the feeling that Gregg Hurwitz is running out of story lines for Agent X and this book just added a little different twist, where Evan Smoke is working out 2 major "problem projects" at the same time, which "rule #7 says only work on one project at a time" says is a big NO NO! It's starting to get formulaic and adding 2 problems to solve at the same time for Agent X, really didn't add anything significant to the story.
It appears that the Agent X series is getting a little long in the tooth and Gregg Hurwitz is having writers block coming up with some new fresh angle or story line to refresh the series. I really hope he comes up with a new approach with this series .
We need a new angle here to refreshen the series. Think hard Gregg!
thanks for the fun trip!! Don't let it end here!!

Love Orphan X, Mia and Peter

I love these characters, especially Evan, Mia & Peter. I love the relationship that is growing between Peter and Evan. Even though it seems that Evan & Mia are over I hope Hurwitz some how keeps the relationship going. Love the action and Evans constant cool demeanor thru out the whole book. Now that his past is somewhat out of the way, I can’t imagine what’s next for Evan or Orphan X. Great book! Can’t wait for the next one!
