Publisher's summary

In John Verdon’s most sensationally twisty novel yet, ingenious puzzle solver Dave Gurney brings his analytical brilliance to a shocking murder that couldn’t have been committed the way the police say it was.

The daunting task that confronts Gurney, once the NYPD’s top homicide cop: determining the guilt or innocence of a woman already convicted of shooting her charismatic politician husband - who was felled by a rifle bullet to the brain while delivering the eulogy at his own mother’s funeral.

Peeling back the layers, Gurney quickly finds himself waging a dangerous battle of wits with a thoroughly corrupt investigator, a disturbingly cordial mob boss, a gorgeous young temptress, and a bizarre assassin whose child-like appearance has earned him the nickname Peter Pan.

Startling twists and turns occur in rapid-fire sequence, and soon Gurney is locked inside one of the darkest cases of his career - one in which multiple murders are merely the deceptive surface under which rests a scaffolding of pure evil. Beneath the tangle of poisonous lies, Gurney discovers that the truth is more shocking than anyone had imagined.

And the identity of the villain at the mystery’s center turns out to be the biggest shock of all.

Narration makes it

The story was good but not spectacular. Hardwick is one of the most unsympathetic characters I’ve read in a long time. I just cannot like the guy, not even a little. I’m not sure I would’ve finished it without Scott Bricks narration.

The twists and turns of the incredible plot!

The narrator captured every nuance of the characters. Scott Brick is the best!!! I have listened to him narrate many wonderful books written by great authors!❤️

what a finish!

First, Scott Brick is an outstanding narrator. In installment #4, Gurney and his sidekick Jack Hardwick face off with the world's most notorious hit man. And for comic relief, there's Madeliene and her chickens. I know other readers criticized this side plot, but I think it keeps the Gurneys grounded for us. And as for the conclusion, well, where else but a carnival with a ferris wheel? Excellent! Is this great fiction? No. Is it a terrific thriller? I think yes.

It’s a good story, but…

Scott Brick can make any story sound amazing. His different inflection and tone for each character is amazing. This is the fourth Dave Gurney book that I’ve listened to and I love the mysteries he solves. My only problem with the author is how he has every character restate everything the previous character said. “They restate everything the previous character said?“ Yes! They repeat everything that the previous character said. It gets annoying and could trim hours off of the book. Other than that I will probably keep listening to this series.
