Publisher's summary

Centuries before the Clone Wars or the Empire, in the early days of the High Republic, it was an age of exploration in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

Daring pilots chart new routes through hyperspace, while Pathfinder teams make contact with frontier worlds to invite them to join the Republic. When a Pathfinder team's communications droid is found drifting in space, damaged and bearing a cryptic message, Jedi Knight Silandra Sho and her Padawan, Rooper Nitani, are sent to find the missing team members.

Their investigation leads them to the planet Gloam, a ravaged world said to be haunted by mythical monsters. Can the Jedi find the missing Pathfinders and unravel the mystery of the monsters? The answers lie in a hidden city beneath the planet's surface. . . .

Decent

I've felt the last few HR books have been real letdowns. This one had a solid storyline without any of the forced ideas rampant in the previous few YA books. This one actually felt believable.

Story was ok, narration was difficult.

The narrator has a strange cadence that I found difficult to listen to. Not the best talent choice for a books with various characters where the narrator pretty much has one voices for males and one for females. Also, if you’re reading a Star Wars book, shouldn’t you know how to pronounce Kyber? I couldn’t listen after she said “kiber”. Sorry, but come on.

I rated the story well, though to be honest the dull monotone narration meant I didn’t follow the story as closely and I’d be hard pressed now to recall many points of the story line. I may have to read this book, the audiobook was really lacking.

Better than some High Republic books

Good narration.

The story is hot and then cold, slow then quick. I hope the High Republic gets better.

A good story

It’s a good story and maybe an introduction to some new characters but not as interesting as the rest.

Might be good to the young adult, but this was a three page story at best

Not sure why this was not just a short story. Hard to keep my attention to it. Could’ve been a smaller story within a bigger one. Felt like they are trying too hard to extend things and grab cash. Instead they need to build a B enter storyline with a faster pace…boring, and frankly kind of silly. Minerals as blood..meh.

A fun adventure story, Star Wars back to its roots.

This was a refreshing listen. The author really captured the adventure side of Star Wars while still progressing the overall narrative of the overarching storyline of The High Republic. This is my favorite story so far of phase two and the author was instantly able to establish these new characters. The narrator was great too and very engaging. The highlight though was the audio design which was very nuanced and more expansive than usual, but yet not distracting. Also, it was nice change of pace for the score to not feature the original trilogy’s themes and melodies, it really helped this stand on its own. Thanks for bringing the classic Star Wars feel to this new era of stories.

Such a fun story.

This was by far my favorite of the youth books in that high republic era so far.

At the very least pronounce Kyber correctly..

The story is wonderful. However, it's like nails on a chalk board listening to the narrator butcher things like Kyber and Mirialan. Other than the terrible pronunciation of some of the most basic things in Star Wars, great addition to the universe.
