About this listen

Fire Dragons once again walk the world....

Dragons....

Mechanoid armies....

Daring stealth mission....

Dragon vs ship combat....

Jared and his dragon companion Scarlet return from their quest to find the rest of the fire dragons triumphant, but will it be enough to throw off the chains of captivity binding mankind to a dismal existence?

The rulers in the floating cities tighten the noose around Jared's neck as dissent brews among the waterfolk, putting everyone he loves and protects in danger. While ships from above pursue the group with powerful plasma weapons, the fire dragons agree to bond with the waterfolk, allowing them to develop special abilities and grow their strength.

Even with superhuman bodies and the increased power of bonded fire dragons, Jared and Scarlet come to a critical realization; they will never stand against the cities alone. Building alliances sends them to the far corners of the world on a quest for vengeance and justice.

Hopefully you enjoyed the first one as much as I did. This 2nd installment is a great book. The colony is on the move. Scarlets family has Arrived. Other elemental
dragons are awakened. There is more
Bonding, nanite exploration, encounters with the cities, other colonies and more. And the ending? Who doggie what a cliff hangar. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

Excellent Edge of Your Seat Apocalyptic Story

Radioactive Revolution is a unique crusade of one man’s drive to defeat the cruel and oppressive cities in this dystopian post-apocalyptic story. Richard Hummel, the author, delivers a powerful and vividly detailed story that lays emotions out for everyone to feel but also allows the listener to be “in” the story.

Jared is a man with a special bond to a fire dragon. Jared is seeking revenge against those who killed his mother and who keeps his people oppressed. Jared moves to build an army but to do so he must bond his people to other dragons or creatures in order to take on the cities and their rulers. With each section of the book, the listener is given an inside view of what Jared and Scarlet (his dragon) are talking about as telepathy is a common communication tool. This tool makes the dialog more tangible and moves the story along much smoother.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book, the one piece that stands out as the deadliest and most relatable experience centers on the spiders and Jared’s reaction to them. The emotion, fear, and caution that Hummel describes are very realistic and whole. It gave me chills!

Throughout the book, Hummel keeps the listener guessing. When one is expecting a certain outcome and it’s almost delivered Hummel throws in a sudden twist that leaves the listener wide-eyed and on the edge of his/her chair.

The development of the story moves gracefully and smoothly from beginning to end with a cliff hanger that guarantees the listener will be back. Each character is developed fully throughout the story, giving us bits and pieces creating a connection to most of the characters. I look forward to hearing more about the griffin in the next book in the series. This character was introduced with just enough to keep us intrigued but not enough for us to know him or how he will grow. Hummel was very deliberate in his character development and it shows.

The narrators, Armen Taylor and Anneliese Rennie were excellent! They are talented voice actors that helped to bring the characters to life through their rich tones and delivery. Armen’s Jared was strong and sure even when he doubted his plans. Anneliese performed Scarlet and other female leads with strength and the proper aloofness that one would expect from a dragon. They both took the book to the next level that only good strong narrators can. I hope to hear more of their work.
This is a book that I loved! I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more. Although I did not read the first book in the series, I was able to pick up the gist of what happened in book one.
I highly recommend this book!

Was it sci-fi/fantasy or a romance novel?

The story line was awesome, and I really enjoyed the idea behind it. However, I was tempted to skip ahead multiple times for the several minute long discussions of “feelings” between the main character and his romantic interest. As a guy who likes listening to sci-fi and fantasy I was turned off by the unending discussions of emotions. Made me wonder how old the author is and how much experience he has with women... it was bad. Only the underlying story line saved the book.

How to politely survive this dystopia

Note: This is book 2 in the series and really works best if you read the books in order.

Minding your manners in a dystopian world – this is the how-to book! Almost all the characters are so polite! The few who are not polite are trouble makers. This story is the nice properly polite version of a dragon-infested dystopian land full of nanites that grant you special abilities. There’s this nebulous antagonist that we glimpse from afar. A few other minor bad guys give Jared a few moments of distress. Really, it’s mostly about scavenging survival gear and being sensitive to one another’s feelings. I want to love this series. There’s so many great things going on with the world building. Yet the characters by and large bore me.

Jared is the leader of this little band of recently freed humans. However there were times I felt that Vanessa (leader of the lake inhabitants) would make the better leader. Jared could be her advisor. Alas, that’s not the case. So we go from one misunderstood feeling to another. There are a lot of ‘pleases’ and ‘thank yous’. Because everyone is being so polite, their individual personalities blend into one another and are individually thinned out.

I do like that this book has both dystopian and litRPG elements to it. The world building is very intriguing. I love the ability to bond with an animal and that animal can either start off self-aware or can grow into it. For instance, Karla has a large cat she bonded with who is just barely starting to get telepathic communication. Meanwhile, Jared is bonded with Scarlet, a fully aware and wise young dragon.

The plot does ramble a bit for the entire book. At first, it’s focused on this group of humans getting along, then it’s about avoiding evil robots from the floating cities, then it’s about meeting more dragons, etc. The ending leaves us on a big cliff hanger. I do have hopes that this series will push the characters harder next book, making them more individual. Maybe they will even cuss and be disrespectful of each other’s personal space. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: Armen Taylor is excellent. I really enjoy listening to his voice. He’s got the perfect sincere, polite voice for Jared. Taylor has unique voices for all the characters. I especially liked Jared’s voice during the very few times he’s truly stressed. Anneliese Rennie voiced all the female lines. She had a good voice for Scarlet the dragon. However, she had very little distinction between the various female characters. Since it’s very rare for two or more female characters to talk to each other, this wasn’t a big problem. There were no tech issues with the recording. 4/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book from Audiobooks Unleashed. My opinions are 100% my own.

Great book

I received a code from the author. I really enjoyed this one. It had a good flow and great Narrators! I enjoy listening to anything that has Anneliese Rennie in it. She and Armen Taylor could narrate the US tax code and make it enjoyable.
