Publisher's summary

“How many women cry when angry because we've held it in for so long? How many discover that anger turned inward is depression? Soraya Chemaly’s Rage Becomes Her will be good for women, and for the future of this country. After all, women have a lot to be angry about.” (Gloria Steinem)

A transformative audiobook urging 21st-century women to embrace their anger and harness it as a tool for lasting personal and societal change.

Women are angry, and it isn’t hard to figure out why.

We are underpaid and overworked. Too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Too dowdy or too made-up. Too big or too thin. Sluts or prudes. We are harassed, told we are asking for it, and asked if it would kill us to smile. Yes, yes it would.

Contrary to the rhetoric of popular “self-help” and an entire lifetime of being told otherwise, our rage is one of the most important resources we have, our sharpest tool against both personal and political oppression. We’ve been told for so long to bottle up our anger, letting it corrode our bodies and minds in ways we don’t even realize. Yet our anger is a vital instrument, our radar for injustice and a catalyst for change. On the flip side, the societal and cultural belittlement of our anger is a cunning way of limiting and controlling our power.

We are so often told to resist our rage or punished for justifiably expressing it, yet how many remarkable achievements in this world would never have gotten off the ground without the kernel of anger that fueled them? Rage Becomes Her makes the case that anger is not what gets in our way, it is our way, sparking a new understanding of one of our core emotions that will give women a liberating sense of why their anger matters and connect them to an entire universe of women no longer interested in making nice at all costs.

Following in the footsteps of classic feminist manifestos like The Feminine Mystique and Our Bodies, Ourselves, Rage Becomes Her is an eye-opening audiobook for the 21st-century woman: an engaging, accessible credo offering us the tools to re-understand our anger and harness its power to create lasting positive change.

Excellent!

This is a powerful book that ended up increasing my anger in some ways, but I would say that's not a bad thing. I think everyone should read this, but especially women. We too often don't realize the reality of how we are controlled/managed, the ways we are harming ourselves in not realizing or acknowledging the extent to which we suppress ourselves, and how we perpetuate the behaviors with our children and peers. You want to know where our anger comes from? Read this book!

I enjoyed listening to the author read the book. Often that is not the case, but she made it interesting.

Valuable Read for Women and Men

Book highlights many stories where anger was warranted but either misunderstood or minimized. I see myself on many of these pages and it feels good to know I’m not alone.

A Must Read/Listen

Such a powerful book. I will warn it's triggering, especially if you can relate. Chemaly does an amazing job of bringing so many issues that impact women's liberation, health, and identity under patriarchial systems. Definitely a must-read for anyone who wants to understand how young girls and boys are socialized to emotionally exist and the impact of sexism/misogyny. The book may be overwhelming for those who haven't read or studied up on gendered systems of oppression. Highly recommend, nonetheless!

Rage Becomes Her

In this incredibly timely piece, Soraya Chemaly delves into the reality that anger as an emotion has been encouraged in masculine forms and suppressed in feminine. While her work focuses on women (rightly so), Chemaly is praise worthy in her inclusion of LGBT people who have largely been relegated to the sidelines in discussions about anger and violence.

This book is world shaking. Read it. Share it. Hear it. Get angry.

excellent book

This was a great book with potential to change society if only many people would read it. It is eye-opening and liberating. It helped me to embrace anger that was long overdue and that has been an on-going healing experience.

This book is a great resource and book to listen to. Trigger warning for chapter 6 on violence against women.
