Separated from her ship, Major Trace Thakur is stranded on the reeh-occupied world of Rando. The native corbi have suffered beneath reeh tyranny for 800 years, and many have given up hope. But Trace needs the data stored in the reeh’s genetic technology and command center - the Rando Splicer - if she’s to learn how to save humanity from impending disaster, and is planning an assault against overwhelming odds. She’ll need help from the UFS Phoenix, though, which is caught in a ritual medieval battle to change the croma leadership that sees her crew embarking on a perilous journey across a warring desert continent. Should they fail, humanity could be just one of many species to die.

Brilliant

Funniest scenes go to Peanut. Snarkiest lines go to Styx.
As far as character development, it’s all about young Skah losing his baby teeth, Trace becoming a stone, and Tiga (the female Corbi rebel) becoming nuanced and much wiser.
The plot chugs along nicely, like a train, and ends with a few nice surprises and a good idea of what’s to come in the next book.
Quibbles: The author tends to interrupt the flow of action sequences with expository or reflective statements. The dark government secret trope is getting repetitive across books.

Better and better

The characters are growing & changing based on that growth & events, circumstances, etc. in ways that seem plausible. I’m still getting surprises where I can say, I didn’t see that coming. I find myself getting really caught up in the different character’s stories. It’s not just about the 1 MC, but a number of characters in the book are followed, each having their own chapters, or portions of chapters, switching back and forth between the group of them & what they’re doing, as the format to move the story along & I find myself getting so engrossed in what 1is doing that when it switches to another, I’m frustrated because I wanted to keep going with that one, but only a few minutes later I’m feeling the same way about the current character & this keeps happening. Basically all the characters are done with such fullness I can’t help but get sold hook line and sinker on all of them.
This is 1 of the better series I’ve read lately. I’m enjoying it as much as I have reading Galaxies Edge, Paradigm 2045, The Lost Stars/Lost Fleet (Jack Campbell), Koban/Koban Universe & Dunes to name a couple current & past favorites.
I just bought the next2 books in Spiral Wars series & it’s time to dive into the “Ceephay Queen.”
PS - The Narrator, John Lee, is easy to listen to & does a great job bringing these books to life. I’ve come to enjoy him in this series as much as RC Bray in others. I’d be extremely disappointed if another narrator showed up so I hope Mr. Lee continues to narrate the rest of The Spiral Wars.
Series still going strong
