About this listen

1535, Oxfordshire.

Lady Maude Shaftsberry has it all sorted. She will marry the well-connected lord, ascend the ranks of the Tudor court, and be mother to a small battalion of boys. But Maude has a secret that she carries everywhere: a birthmark that stretches over her stomach and between her legs. Is it a mark of fertility? Did her mother rub her pregnant belly too vigorously on the full moon? Or is it the sign of a witch?

Her new husband is certain it's the latter. Maude, faced with annulment and the nunnery, must make her own way.

The witches in town are the only ones who will give her refuge, but staying in the apothecary comes at a price. She must help and assist the witches. Surrounded by potions, star charts, and a fairy who appears to be a very large and handsome man who helps around the house, Maude begins to realize there is a strange and seductive power in being outcast.

Regrettably, I am About to Cause Trouble is a tale about being ostracised, and finding our power and family in unusual places.

The most wonderful book

Fabulous pacing, the main character was so easy to love but also be infuriated with. Also very happy with the subtle love story.

Charming story with a bite!

Main character starts out as an unlikable aristocratic brat, but grows into a charming and disarmingly honest heroine. Narration was wonderful and the story grows from a girl's shallow tale of woe into something much more. 🖤

Longing for more!

Oh my god, this story was so great. Love love love! I didn't want to put it down.

I loved every second of it, and it's so hard for me to get into fiction. I loved growing up with Maud, growing into her power. I loved how much I could relate to her story of being marked. I loved the characters, their relationships, it felt real and alive, magic infused my life.

I only wish Amie had resolved the story more. I felt a little dropped at the end, and wanted to know more about what happened next. Maybe this was intentional, but I could have used a tiny bit more aftercare.

Keep writing, Amie!!

Great pace, delightful story, drips with intrigue

I’ve not enjoyed a book this much in ages! The pace clipped right along, story dripping with intrigue, the twists and turns. I had my hanky out in some places and fell off my chair laughing in others. Thank you, Aimee, for this delightful story! I even looked up the historical references and love how you wiggled this story in place!

The fun look at how sometimes what we think is the wrong path is the way we should go.

A playful and entertaining story. The characters were fun and the exploration of how we sometimes stumble or fall into the right life path resonated with me. Witty and well written, I have already recommended it to friends. The narration is done well although sometimes I thought it had paused between chapters…Overall I enjoyed my foray into this story.
