About this listen

Augusta Ballinger was quite sure that it was all a dreadful mistake. The chillingly pompous and dangerously disturbing Earl of Graystone could not possibly wish to marry her. Why, it was rumored that his chosen bride must be a veritable model of virtue. And everyone knew that Augusta, as the last of the wild, reckless Northumberland Ballingers, was a woman who could not be bothered by society's rules.

That was why the spirited beauty had planned a midnight encounter to warn the earl off, to convince him that she would make him a very poor wife indeed. But when she crawled in through his darkened study window, Augusta only succeeded in strengthening Harry's resolve: to kiss the laughter from those honeyed lips and teach this maddening miss to behave! How could he possibly know that it was he who was in for a lesson...as his brazen fiancée set out to win his heart - and an old and clever enemy stepped in to threaten their love, their honor, and their very lives?©2009 Amanda Quick (P)2009 Brilliance Audio, Inc.

Every book needs a character like Augusta

Amanda Quick is one of my favorite authors. It's rare that I'll listen to her in audiobook format but this is one of my favorites and I needed something entertaining. This story has it all. Love, romance, drama, excitement, action, etc. She makes you fall in love with all the main characters. You'll definitely laugh and maybe cry but you'll definitely be entertained and engaged as Augusta finds love and family in the most comical way. Her blunders and loyalty will endear you to her. Happy listening!

Narcissistic Hero

I love Amanda Quick but every once and a while she creates a romantic hero who is everything but a hero. Harry, unfortunately, is a narcissistic gaslighter. Every time the heroine confronts him on his abusive behavior he convinces her that she’s imagining things or over reacting or his actions are somehow her fault. I became so frustrated with this happening again and again. It’s a shame. The plot, the heroine, and the other characters, are very entertaining. So much so that they almost carried me past the self absorbed hero. But in the end I just couldn’t get past his abuse of the heroine. I’m sure at the time this story took place his behavior was acceptable but romance readers are not from that time and so we expect more from our romantic heroes. At least this reader does.

Light hearted Escapism.

I always enjoyed Amanda Quick when I was younger. I will get her books if they go on sale and this one is a typical Amanda Quick book. I liked it, but didn’t love it. The bad guy was obvious from the beginning and the hero was a bit stuffy. But as a light-hearted regency romance it was good for some escapism. There was a lot of complaining about the narrator, and while she was not the best I have ever heard she did alright.

Good story, narrator difficult to listen to

I enjoyed the story. The story however, the narrator’s was way over dramatic. Parts were done well, but I had to increase the reading speed to get through the irritation of the narrator.

Great Romance

I love most of Amanda Quick romances they are so mysterious without being stale, funny without being silly and very romantic in the Victorian Era setting.

Fantastic.

Very good story. I will be listening to this one again. Historical romance with some action and the narration is fantastic. I really enjoy Anne Flosnik's narration. Some people give her negative feed back but I think her narration brings life to the story, she catches the mood and sex of the characters. Every Amanda Quick novel I have listened to has been great.

A wonderful book by Amanda Quick

I enjoyed reading Amanda's book as narrated by Anne Flosnik. I now have several of her books and love to listen to them over and over again. The stories just don't get old

Unnecessary explicit sex.

The story was a good one , but the villain was easily identified early on. The H was too pompous and domineering, and the h, who was supposed to be intelligent, acted tstl too many times. The explicit sex was unnecessary, and seemed added to tittilate the reader and pad the page count.

Great book but narrator not

One of my favorite Amanda Quick books, I was hopeful the audio version would be top notch. Flosnik (narrator) is good on many books but doesn’t bring off the wit and personalities of the characters here.
