About this listen

D'Anne Burwell's smart, athletic son - raised in a loving and prosperous home - begins abusing OxyContin as a teenager, and within a year drops out of college, walks out of rehab, and lands homeless on the streets of Boulder. Struggling with fear, guilt, and a desperate need to protect her son, D'Anne grapples with her husband's anger and her daughter's depression as the family disease of addiction impacts them all. She discovers the terrifying links between prescription-drug abuse and skyrocketing heroin use. And she comes to understand that to save her child she must step back and allow him to fight for his own soul.

Saving Jake gives voice to the devastation shared by the families of addicts, and provides vital hope. Above all, it is a powerful personal story of love and redemption.

Raw perspective of a parent

This story was a powerful, real story of how difficult it can be to not know what is happening with your child but still know they are slipping away. I appreciated her effort to change some of her behaviors and will be putting some of those into practice myself.

Always enjoy an addiction genre book

A great view from close family of how addiction ravages almost all it touches - and how the journey of recovery also can touch those near and dear to an addict

An honest look at a mother’s journey into her son’s addiction battle

This book touched on the very real parts of the struggle of a son or daughter battling addiction. It reminded me that the journey does not end and it is ok to not be ok.

Knowledgeable Book

I haven’t read a book in a long time. I came across this one and loved it. The story is sad and beautiful. I enjoyed the Narrator, Morgan, who kept me so interested with her sooth tone. This book provides me with much education in addition and the best way a family member can handle the situation for their loved one and themselves. Enjoyable read

Could be helpful for parents who are struggling

While reading this, I couldn’t help but think about the quote by Michael Scott, “Why don't I tell you what my greatest weaknesses are? I work too hard, I care too much and sometimes I can be too invested in my job.”

This mother did a great job of expressing the highs and lows of loving an addict, and all the stress and heartbreak that goes along with it. There just seem to be something missing in the story.
