About this listen

A man’s lifetime of secrets and lies. A woman on the hunt for his hidden riches. But there’s a sting in the tale in this gripping short story by the New York Times bestselling author of We Lie Here.

Frankie is a caregiver facing a meager and thankless future. Until her elderly charge dies—but not before revealing his secret. It’s buried in Death Valley. Enough money to change Frankie’s life forever. All she has to do is follow his instructions and stay on the path, and her prayers will be answered. It’s everything Frankie hopes for. But nothing like she expects.

Rachel Howzell Hall’s Scorpions is part of Never Tell, a heart-pounding collection of stories about secrets, lies, and mind games. They can be read or listened to in one sitting. Just keep the endings to yourself.

Heh

This was a fun short story. A good reminder that everything you do has consequences.

Great story.

Definitely no honor among theives. This book was so engaging and full of human flaws. Narrator did a great job bringing this one to life. This series is crazy good.

Interesting enough to keep me listening!

This was a pretty decent short story, it was believable and one of those stories where you almost know what will happen but not quite sure so you’re eager to find out more. I wish the main character’s personality could have been embellished on a little more-but maybe that’s the point, she was a just a average person who had something crazy happen to her -could happen to anyone I guess. I give it 3 stars which for me means good/average.

Quick & Captivating

I love how the end brings the main characters life full circle. The supporting characters foiled many of the lead characters weaknesses - this has her introspectivly seeing howshe is like the others.

Interesting but unfinished

This was interesting getting a glimpse of the now and then going back several days to see how things started. This sorry is mostly about greed but also people down on their luck as a result of their choices. I was waiting to see how things would turn out in the end, but perhaps it's up to the reader to conclude what really happens.

not for me

2.75⭐️

Frankie has had a tough life. That is until the old man she takes care of dies, leaving her a treasure map. Treasure that will change Frankie's life.

My Thoughts

Omg the way this author describes a fart! 😂 well done. Had me laughing out loud 🤣

That ends where I enjoyed the book. I had a hard time with this read. I couldn't relate to the characters. I couldn't quite get into the story. It all felt over the top but not in a good way.

Frankie has a criminal record. She keeps running into people on drugs. ( author over description of heroin use was a real turn-off )
There was nothing redeeming about her. I just couldn't like or care about any of the characters.

Great short story.

This was an excellent short story. Well written. Captivating. I enjoyed it till the end. I could easily see reading this as a full novel with subplots and other developments. Highly recommend.

Moral: There are always Consequences

I have to say this was a good read and wonderfu listen to. I read along as I listened.

I am intrigued by the writing of this author and I read The Good Sister and did not realize this was the same author.

This book only seals the the thought that The Haves will do anything for more when they have more than enough and The Have Nots can easily be sidetracked if you don't listen to wisdom. The Prayer of Jabez is not meant how used but I love how you can see the gift and what happens without the work.

Looking forward to more!!!
