Publisher's summary

The Great West stretched on endlessly, and it was filled with pioneer mining towns, magic, and opportunity.

But it was also filled with brigands, monsters, and the unknown.

Fortunately, I was around to protect people. For a price, that is.

And I only have three simple rules. My code, if you will:

I’ll kill anything or anyone for a price.

I get paid up front.

I leave town right after I’ve performed my task…and enjoyed whatever townswomen offer themselves to me as a bonus.

They call me a hero, but I’m just out here looking to get rich.

MC is supposed to be a prince...

I really couldn't get behind the the narration and the way the author is trying to push the MC's use of super stupid out West "talkin". He even uses it in his own inner monologue and he was born and raised as a prince till he left at 18...

Pretty great until it wasn't.

I actually kinda loved this story. Until I hated it.

The final act of the book was just the absolute worst kind of storytelling imaginable to me.

I could just about stomach the tedious history between the MC and Vera (not really, she's terrible and there wasn't a good enough reason shown for him to still be in love with her and not off her, but I digress), but when our irreverent 'amoral' hero gets into a philosophical debate with the cheesy, monologuing villain instead of just ignoring him, I checked out.

It somehow gets worse from there. There's lots of monologuing at each other at the end. MC with Vera, MC with Evil Wizard, Vera with Evil Wizard...

The pace of the story had come to such a screeching halt that I just skipped the final confrontation at the end just so I could be done with the book.

Man, it could have been so much better if the two just tried monologuing at the MC and he just stonewalls them. More Clint Eastwood instead of cheesy anime protagonist.

I'll not be continuing with this series.

Good book

Book was interesting. Not what I was expecting, but kept me busy and in the story.

It's worth reading twice

My initial reaction to sell so it wasn't the best one however after my I listen to it again straight through can I can say I love the book the storyline is a little different from the other Logan Jacobs but however I think my lack of Interest came from the narration more for me than the actual book.

Dislike like Vera, I would have killed her

I dislike that the mc loves and hates Vera, like dude just kill her, she tried to kill you, I’m tired of these fucking books always the same, being fucking stupid cause she is hot, or whatever, she tried to KILL YOU!!!!!!! and you are still going to trust her! For once someone kill the person who tried to kill you!! What a joke, but other than that it was ok, the best part is the taking horse, other than that just another idiot mc

Just doesn’t feel right

If you like the story of a not hero -“hero” with a sketchy background and a crazy ex girlfriend who more than ever really needs to die by the end of the book cause she’s basically worse than the “bad guy” but doesn’t get any punishment for being the cause of the MC trials and tribulations then your in luck ... the horse has more sense than the MC ... but

That doesn’t mean it’s an enjoyable book it really had me up til they met his EX and she tried killing him more times than all the blades and gizmos on a Swiss Army knife ...

Performance is always great in the audio book and Marissa Parness voice is seductive and sultry as every while Alex gives off that Boston high society turn westerner that just fits the bill for the MC ...

Not My Favorite

So, a woman you love tries to kill you... Literally. Not once, not twice, but three times. Not to mention her raving about becoming a god and using the world's inhabitants as her slaves for eternity. The good news is she wants you along for the ride. She doesn't love you, but she promises never to tire of you... Or try to kill you, AGAIN... And the all-powerful sorcerer she has dumped you for and is sort of engaged to, won't mind having her Ex around the palace, FOREVER. Ummm, I'm gonna say no. But not our Amoral Hero. Despite having the good fortune to have just about any woman he meets in his travels, he seems to have forgotten everything this woman has done to him. While running from the demons in her employ, he is reminiscing about her body... In detail... Seriously? Obsess much? Once this part of the storyline started mid-way through the book, it just kept going downhill. The first half was a brilliant, fun change to other books by the author. However, after taking on a pack of werewolves to save a town the story takes a hard left turn from which it doesn't recover.
