About this listen

Her world was color. Canvas and paint. Indie O'Connell lived inside her head. Her voices the muse. And as a freshman at St. Peter's College, all she wanted was to create a name for herself with the brush in her hand.

His world was over. Despite his humble upbringing, Kai Carter seemed to have it all. Captain of the swim team and a full scholarship. His golden boy status a mask he had to wear to keep his dream and his family afloat. All the pieces of his life dangled precariously from his fingertips.

Forced to fight a battle he'd never signed up for, Kai's loyalty turned out to be his undoing, and like a good captain, no matter what the cost, he'd gone down with the ship. They never planned for their worlds to collide. He was her brother's best friend. She was supposed to be invisible.

Off limits.

Being together, regardless of how much they wanted it, was a line they'd never cross. But when lives get messy, lines get blurred, and in love, nothing is ever black and white.

Contains mature themes.

Such a beautiful duet...BUT...

This and the first book in the duet were both beautifully written! I realized after starting book 1 I'm quite a bit older than perhaps the targeted audience, however I still laughed, cried, and felt all the feels! Indy is completely relatable to any insecure, perhaps over-protected high school/college girl. What Kai does to cope with his secrets is probably the same things 80% of the population does or has done at one point or another. Whereas I disagreed with the way Royal & Camden handled Kai esp after what he did for them in book 1, I can see how you can just get wrapped up in your own story and forget other people have stories going on too.
All in all this was an amazing duet that I highly recommend. HOWEVER, there's a different series with the PARENTS stories that I didn't find until AFTER!! So there's that 😕

Absolutely LOVED it

This may be only the third book of A.M. Johnson that I have read. This book is part of a two book series and superseded the first on by far. Kai and Indie made my heart bleed for them, especially Indie as she suffers from a mental illness. She works hard daily to overcome the voices in her head by completely immersing herself into painting, Kai has his own demons and family issues, a mother that is everything to him that is dying, he also has to overcome so much but has always done it in a destructive way. Indie is Kai's best friends sister, they start out as friends with their secret interest in each other for more and then more happens secretly of course, as their relationship develops in to so much more they feel guilty for not telling Royal (her twin brother) but Indie eventually explains how she see's Kai in seven shades of color. Such a great book and narration. I have had this series in by library for at least a year, now I don't know what took me so long to listen to it.

Conflicted / excellent writing

!Some Spoilers / Warnings in this review!

- Love the writing.

- Glad that the POV of someone with mental illness is portrayed well. Representation like this needs to be seen more often.

- Disturbed that the character from _ Let There Be Light _, Royal (“Blue”) is written as a shallow, cruel person. It’s hard to reconcile who he is in the first book to the selfish person in this book.

If you liked who Royal was in the first book, be warned that he is not a sympathetic or even kind person in this one. It was jarring. People have many sides, but it’s hard to imagine Royal changed that much.

- For all the amazing writing, something is missing, to me. Kai’s pain, struggles, talent, grief and loyalty are sidelined, left unresolved.

Kai is shown so openly, so shatteringly loyal and hurt, only to become two dimensional again. He is the way, a means to the implied Happily Ever After, but how he gets there stops being told.

He holds flowers. He is The Guy. His artistic accomplishments, grief and healing are only implied after a point. Several characters owe him an apology.

His sketchbook is left unseen.

He’s punished for keeping his promises.

- If you want something painful and beautiful in a romance format, this fits.

Kai and Indie are Beautiful

I was prepared to be disappointed as I had listened to Let There Be Light and I thought that a sequel was bound to disappoint!!!
I was WRONG. These two were wonderfully done. Love the overall feeling of connection AM Brings to her novels! This is my 6th and they do not disappoint! I love the alternating POV's and even more than that are the inner feelings you can feel viscerally throughout - it takes a special gift to write that realistically - not boring - well done - I can't wait for the next title, which is in the wings! Seven Shades of You, Breakaway, Possession, Poet, Kingdom are ALL Amazing! Getting ready to start Sacred Heart LOVE YOUR NARRATORS - Shedlock, Hamilton and the female narrators so far do not disappoint!!!

Love changes hearts for the better. No matter the past and family you’re born, but the one you make for your own.

Just WOW…

I honestly started this book because I loved the first book in the series, Let There Be Light, so much. I was hoping to get glimpses of Royal and Camden in it, just to hang onto them a little longer. While I wasn’t disappoint on that front, I soon found myself totally wrapped up in Kai and Indy’s story.

The way their love unfolded, as they separately fought their own demons, was just beautiful. I appreciated how the author gave equal time to the battles both characters faced. I honestly searched for small pockets of time where I could continue to listen to this story because I didn’t want to put it down.

The only area where I was slightly disappointed was toward the end of the book. I would have gladly given up the entire gallery scene just to have had more time at the dance with these two. Thank goodness for the epilogue!! This one will stay with me for a while.

Slow Burn

A beautifully written second story to this brother/sister duet.

A slow burn and passionate story about first love and finding someone who loves you for exactly who you are.

Art is an integral part of Indie, it’s how she shares herself and filters the world. Through art she finds Kai. They of course know each other, given Kai is best friends with Indie’s brother, but it’s not until art brings them together that they truly see each other.

As Kai brings Indie out of her protective bubble, Indie gives Kai the space and safety to decide his own future.

They are lovely, and will make you wish everyone could find someone so perfect.

Narrators Teddy Hamilton and Samantha Summers do a great job with this.
