About this listen

His world was water and rhythm. Hard work and drive kept Royal O'Connell one step ahead of his competition. His spot on the swim team, keeping his scholarship, was the only plan that mattered.

His world was ebony and ivory. Natural talent and ambition set Camden Morgan apart from the other music majors. His dedication scored him a full ride.

Normally, their paths would have never crossed...but when Royal meets his best friend's new roommate, his big plan and Camden's controlled environment faces a variable that could destroy it all: attraction.

The world they live in had no room for error. That undeniable pull between them was dangerous, and neither one of them could've prepared for the choice they'd have to make.

Love isn't always an easy road, and when everything they've worked for is on the line, they'll have to decide if being together is worth the risk.

Contains mature themes.

Wow!

An amazing story. Johnson takes us inside the characters, and let’s us feel them. I hope for more like this. The narration was outstanding!

Slow burn

I really enjoyed Royal and Camden's story. It was not at all what I expected and pleasantly surprising. This is a very slow burn but so worth the listen or read. I listened to the audiobook and Aaron Shedlock and Teddy Hamilton did an amazing job with this story.

Just Beautiful!

I am a fan of A.M. Johnson but held off listening to this book - and I regret every minute of it !

I mean duh, Teddy Hamilton and Aaron Shedlock are amazing as always . The author tells a beautiful story of a boy who has only ever had music and a boy who has always been shown love and acceptance .. and how they are perfect for one another. I loved how the subject of mental illness is managed - as something that exists, its not the best but we love the people and we help them manage .

Great story

I really liked this love story, the way how emotions were expressed and described. The main characters are so different and yet they found each other. The one thing I didn't love is the fact that they are 19,too early to find hea,but didn't ruined overall opinion about the book. Narrators were great,as always, especially Teddy.

AMAZINGLY WRITTEN

ive listened to 100s of romances an this has got to be my favorite so far Aaron an teddys voice together is like gravel in the ocean on a stormy night this book was so intensively romantic and shows that there is a deepness to silence. I loved it even the words like a slow but deep melody.

Just a Beautiful Story about Two Beautiful Souls

While this is the exact type of story I love, I purchased and moved this book to the top of my TBR pile because of the narrators, Teddy Hamilton and Aaron Shedlock. Together they are the holy grail of story tellers for me.

I will admit, I felt like this story started slow. I hung in there though and was so glad I did. I really liked how we started the book by watching Royal deal with his attraction to Camden and then having the strength to act on it. Next we see Camden gain strength through the beginning of their relationship, enough to finally come out to his parents. Lastly, we see them grow in strength together as they come out to Royal’s family and the whole school. Loved this book.

I absolutely LOVED this book!!

This was the first A.M. Johnson book I have read and I will for sure to check out her other books.

I’ve read hundreds of romance novels of numerous different tropes over the past couple years… a lot of awesome books, and this one is one of my top 5 favorite stories. There was some sexy action, but it wasn’t trashy or overly smutty. It was sweet, exploring, and necessary to the story. It was detailed but well written. However, the love story in itself is the heart of the book. This is not a typical romance novel, but an inspiring coming of age story for LGBT+ community. I’ve read many m/m novels and this is my favorite. It hooked me in from the get go. There was some focus on mental health which I appreciated how it was not viewed as taboo or shameful, but recognized and shown a positive light on a mental health circumstance. The only thing I wish would have been addressed that wasn’t, was Camden’s obvious symptoms of autism, high functioning, but his entire personality and quirks screamed autism. Having two autistic children myself, I would have loved it if that were addressed bc it shows someone with certain social challenges having success in making friends. That would be the only thing I would have changed.
I fell in love with both Royal and Camden. The side characters such as Indie and Kai were great as well.
I highly recommend this book! It’s worth the credit and all other positive reviews were spot on,

Unexpected, but so good. Definitely recommend

4.25 stars

This was so easy to enjoy. The story isn't very angsty and the characters are great. Camden being an introvert was so relatable. I felt all that. Royal and Camden's relationship is so sweet and real. I like that there were no games, just honesty. I liked the little community they had with Kai and Indie. I loved seeing Royal's parents show Camden the parental love and support he has never received, but deserves. I appreciated how Camden's family "drama" didn't overtake the story and turn into a rift in their relationship. Camden finally stood up for himself and, if anything, his and Royal's relationship ended up even stronger. There was a little blip with Royal's uncle, but it wasn't as big of a thing and it didn't come from the bigoted place of Camden's parents. I really appreciated the positive mental health rep in this one. We often see characters with schizoaffective disorder as either being villainized or just not portrayed in the best light, but that didn't happen here and I loved that so much. All in all, this was a great read and a pleasant surprise with how much I enjoyed it.

Beautiful story but that’s it

I was looking for a hurt/ comfort awakening troupe to get me out of my book slump and came across this book. It was a very sweet story with little angsts here and there but nothing major. I admired the dedication, love and support the 2 main characters had for each other. I didn’t mind the slow burn. I also loved how vulnerable Royal was when he came to terms with his sexuality. Teddy and Aaron did a great job with narrations as well.
However, if you’re looking for spice, this book is not it at all, not even during the love scenes. I agree with some of the reviews that for them to be college students and being each others’ firsts, you would expect more. The love scenes were disengaging as if the author just glazed over them. It felt like the author was uncomfortable writing them. They weren’t very descriptive and very easy to miss.
Overall that sweet book but it was just ok for me
