About this listen

Like Father Like Son: I said good-bye to my son. But he had one final request - a letter I'll never forget.

"Dear Dad, If you're reading this, it means I'm gone. I had one dream, growing old with Holland. Death won't stop me from providing for my wife. And because you're the best man I know, what I'm about to ask - my last request - I know you'll do. Please take care of Holland. Take her back to California with you. It's a lot - I know. But, I'm placing my most precious possession in your hands. Love, Scott."

Different as Night and Day: I laid my husband to rest....

Scott was my world and my future. His love for me transcended the dimensions of time and space - having made provisions for me in the event of his death. He was after all in a war zone and the odds were high he may not come home. But now I can't help but think about the new man in my life - my husband's father.

Contains mature themes.

emotionally amazing

from the beginning the story was heart-wrenching and emotional but also relatable in a sense for grief and the loss of someone close and the struggle of every day that goes by without them but that you need to keep going because your life's not over yet. yet had its spicy times and of course an hea. loved listening to these two books back to back.

overall story

I was hesitant on the story since I wasn't too sure how I would feel about it but honestly I'm glad I gave it a chance and listened to it. I enjoyed both narrators. there were parts that had me in tears and there were parts that made me mad. the emotional rollercoaster these 2 characters went through before they got their happiness. I'm glad they got their closure and their happy ending. I understand what Hollad went through but she made me mad a lot and I love that Maguire fought for what he wanted and how well he took care of everyone. I also love that even though the late son is no longer there they never forget about him.

Dragged it

Who doesn’t love a taboo/forbidden romance every now and then? But this one just dragged it far past my interests. With the stacked up number of tragic events and the slow burn between the MCs this book hasn’t left a lasting impression on this reader.

From a military wife

Truly captivating and relatable for a military spouse. So often we struggle with how to honor/ mourn or move on. This book is able to bring a different perspective to a very hard topic.

Lead Female Character Is SO DUMB

Teddy Hamilton is phenomenal, as usual. Female narrator was alright. But the character herself was just the absolute dumbest b*tch ever. Couldn’t find it in me to feel any sympathy for her, any understanding for her actions, and completely unrelatable.

Heart felt story with a twist.

I truly love this book and have tissue with you. I wasn't sure if I could listen to the book because my son has enlisted into the Marines. But after finishing I'm glad I didn't stop listening to the book.

The flow of story..

I was getting worried she would leave.. I had a gut feeling Scott would help with that .. 😉 This story was done so well! I was captivated from the very start. Well done! Totally worth the listen!!

It’s a cute story but it’s quite long and slow

I feel like a LOT could have been skipped because it was irrelevant, but overall not a bad story

Beautiful portrait of resilience & love.

I urge you to ignore the overly emotional negative reviews that focus only on the FMC, and not the book itself. IMHO, Holland is skillfully written and incredibly likable. She’s a smart, resilient, courageous, witty, quirky and memorable FMC.

As a mental health professional, I would like to briefly note that anyone who’s upset about a conflicted widow being “wishy washy” has never experienced a profound grief themselves. If they had, they would understand that it’s normal. Survivors guilt is universally common. It manifests itself in indecision about whether it’s okay to move on and be happy again… fearful that doing so dishonors the person who’s passed. This author has a deep understanding of that.

So… a young widow and her father-in-law. I was intrigued and quite nervous to listen to this audiobook, because it could have been cringey as heck if not handled well by the author. But she struck a perfect balance. I was drawn in and captivated by these characters’ journey from the very beginning all the way to the brilliant ending. It’s my first book by her, but it definitely won’t be the last.

The narrators are both highly talented, and they did a phenomenal job. Teddy Hamilton is one of my favorite male narrators. This was my first audiobook narrated by Charlotte North, and she is now one of my favorite narrators, as well. She perfectly captured the emotional depth and feisty personality of the FMC.

If you are experiencing acute grief, this realistic portrayal may be too painful for you. For everyone else, I highly recommend you give it a chance. This is on my repeat listen shelf. Definitely worth a credit!
