About this listen

Tough-as-nails Bureau of American Defense agent Hunter Thornton-Payne is no stranger to uncomfortable top-secret missions, but tonight takes the cake. He just needs to stick out a stuffy charity fund-raiser long enough to find the ruthless assassin he's hunted for four years. It's a rogue operation, but Hunter's got nothing to lose until a beautiful brunette unexpectedly pulls him into her own dangerous agenda.

Abbie Blanton will do anything to cure her mother's mysterious illness. When a high-profile heiress is murdered as Abbie tries to blackmail her for clues, Abbie realizes she's stumbled into an unforgiving conspiracy - and she's the next target. Soon, she and Hunter discover an alarming connection and begin a treacherous battle against an evil enterprise that someone will go to terrifying lengths to keep hidden.

Incredible series and story

It looks at the damage that emotional abuse can do to adult children. It also shows that allowing yourself to open your self to be vulnerable to the potential of betrayal can be healing if you choose the right person.

Annoying accents

Just finished book 3 and loved it. Book 4, the narrator has added some really annoying accents for the characters who did not have these accents in the previous books. This is really annoying. Might not be so annoying if it had been years since listening to the previous book and knowing the accents didn't exist in that book.
Story line is great. Enjoying the story but want to strangle the narrator for the stupid accents.

Third time was the charm for narrators

It’s amazing the difference a narrator can make. The narrator for the first three books in this series had a cadence and stand that drove me batty. The narrator for the previous book over accented and exaggerated to the point that it took over the story. This narrator hit the Goldilocks zone with pacing, accents and voicing for both male and female characters. Makes me wonder if I’d enjoy the previous stories more with her as the narrator.

This story gave off strong Moonraker vibes, with an evil organization bent on world domination and a riff on human genetics. It even had villains going on long rants, explaining their master plans. I would have liked at bit more action, clever dialogue, and time with other B.A.D. agents, especially given the length of this book. It’s mostly just the two of them. Well, and Boris the butler, who frankly stole the show for his quirky personality.

On the romance side, I loved the way Abbie worked her way into Hunter’s heart. But I could have done without the uber slow burn. It was two hours before they even set eyes on each other, for goodness sake. It was four hours to get to the first kiss and hours (and several interruptions) later until some actual hanky panky.

If Audible hadn’t offered the entire series in its Plus library, I’d never have listened past the first book.
But, this book was good enough for me to give the authors another try.
