Publisher's summary

Together they faced the past . . .

A sense of duty sends Bran Tremayne to Cornwall to confront his heritage of British nobility. Abandoned at birth, Bran wants nothing to do with the embittered remains of his family. But as a special agent for the Home Office, he senses trouble brewing along the coast. And he can't turn away from the vulnerable woman he encounters in the Cornish countryside. Merryn's amnesia makes her past a mystery to them both, but with her life in danger, the only thing Bran knows for sure is that the beautiful stranger needs his protection . . .

But would they share a future?

Leaning into Bran is difficult enough, but can Merryn trust the strong bond—and the powerful passion—she feels for her rugged rescuer? She has no choice once Bran uncovers that she is at the center of a plot between French agents and Cornish smugglers. From misty woodlands to stormy shores, the two join forces with a band of loyal Cornishmen to bring down a common enemy. Yet will their growing love survive the coming peril?

"Putney launches an exciting new historical romance series set in 19th-century Cornwall … Recommended for readers who like some fantasy in their historical romance and appreciate stories with chosen family and strong women." —Library Journal

Not one of MJP's greatest

Eventhough this wasn't wonderful, it was still entertaining and engaging enough for me to finish. The characters were interesting, but dialogue was a bit weak at times. The style is new for MJP and ESP, or being gifted, is sometimes difficult for writers to present well. That was the case in this book. In spite of my lack-lustre review, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Not for me

Mary Jo Putney if one of my very favorite authors. I think Have read almost all of her previous books. The "magical" theme of this book had me wondering if she really wrote it or if someone else was writing it using her name. I hope this series is not a long one and she can return to her previous standard of excellence.

Not a Classic Mary Jo Putney

I have been a long time fan of Ms Putney. I have read several of her books multiple times. In the past she has addressed complex social and psychological issues and build 3 dimensional characters that I care about. This book seems like a hodge podge of Nora Roberts fantasy and Mercedes Lackey mind magic with flat forgettable characters. I'm very disappointed.

Boring

The story takes too long to tell. The dialogue is repetive. Beverly Cricks narration makes all the women sound the same as if they come from Seven Dials and used to be street urchins. She reads well but lacks the ability to make a girl sound pretty or a man handsome.
