Publisher's summary

A clinical psychologist is thrown into her dark past as she races to uncover the truth about her mother's death while struggling with her own mental health.

Can we ever truly know the people we love?

Losing her mother to a hit-and-run at age fifteen threw Beatrice "Beans" Bennett's life into turmoil. Bereft, she developed a life-threatening eating disorder, and went through a challenging recovery process which paved the way for her work as a clinical psychologist decades later.

When a new patient arrives at her office and insists that Beans's mother is still alive—and in danger—Beans is forced to revisit her past in order to uncover the truth. She learns the "patient" is a member of a notorious family that owns a drug company largely responsible for the national opioid epidemic, and that her mother was once tangled in their web. In a race against time—and her mother's assailants-—hile once again facing the disorder she thought she'd put behind her, Beans discovers that, like herself, her mother had a devastating secret.

With its fast-moving, pulse-pounding action and intimate look at mental health, Since She's Been Gone will keep listeners in its grasp long after the final chapter.

Hard to get through

I enjoyed the overall story and enjoyed the back and forth through time but that also made the story seem slow. Often I felt like I could walk away and come back a few minutes later and still have a fairly good understanding of where we were in the story. It just wasn’t compelling and until the last 7 or 8 chapters I did not feel a need to finish or to get to the ending like I had to keep listening.

Worst narrator

I had to give up on this story because the monotone voice of the narrator first let to my mind wandering, then it just became annoying. Never finished.

mixed feelings

the story was pretty interesting but I did not enjoy this narrator's voice. I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't read by a computer generated voice. also I kind of wish I would have known there was mention of an eating disorder in this book. that might be my fault if I missed something in the description, but I probably wouldn't have downloaded it had I known.

Boring

The characters are likable, but the story is repetitive. I felt like something was missing in the story.

Not a True Thriller

This is a book about motherless daughters and eating disorders, with a thriller subplot. Its moving depiction of a brave young woman fighting anorexia is the center of the book, and readers looking for that type of story will enjoy this book. It is not, however, a true thriller with a compelling plot.
