Horror/Kaiju Mashup

This isn’t my first S.T. Hoover book, nor is it my first Kaiju story, but this was completely different than the average Kaiju thriller and definitely different than Hoover’s other work. This one was much more about the horror and supernatural aspects of that. It was disturbing in the way that a horror book can be. It’s scary and will definitely be in my nightmares but it was also something that I kept reading because I wanted to get to the payoff.

Thankfully, Hoover is very good at character building, because this was a character driven novel, even if it’s still about the Kaiju at the end of the day, the characters are what get us there and who are telling the story. Wright was an interesting and unique character that I couldn’t help want to know more about as the story progressed.

I don’t want to speak ill of anyone or anything, especially because I know how hard audiobook narrating and producing are, but I thought that the recording of Siron by Kelsey Ann Wacker was a little underproduced. I’m unsure of what her recording space looks like but I noticed a lot of “dead space” sound (sound not being absorbed). It sounded like this was recorded in more of a normal room compared to a booth with proper sound proofing. Now, that being said, it distracted me, someone who listens to 100-150 books a year. But to an average user, it probably won’t even cross your mind. You might notice it, but then after a chapter or two it’ll go away because your brain ignores it (like it did for me).

Overall, I enjoyed Siron and I thought that it holds up as a horror novel or as a kaiju thriller. That’s pretty hard to do, but I think Hoover pulled it off.

OK story with weird narration

Not a bad story, some gore and decent characters, could have used a little more character building IMO.
