About this listen

A generation ago, continent-sized storms called hypercanes caused the Earth to flood. The survivors were forced to retreat deep underground and build a new society.

This is the story that sixteen-year-old Jansin Nordqvist has heard all of her life.

Jansin grew up in a civilization far below the Earth's surface. She's spent the last eight years in military intelligence training. So when her parents surprise her with a coveted yet treacherous trip above ground, she's prepared for anything. She's especially thrilled to feel the fresh air, see the sun, and view the wide-open skies and the ocean for herself.

But when raiders attack Jansin's camp and take her prisoner, she is forced to question everything she's been taught. What do her captors want? How will she get back underground? And if she ever does, will she want to stay after learning the truth?

Entertaining!

Great story with believable characters and good narration. I do wish there were more character development. I didn't love or hate or really worry too much about the lead character but it was still believable and entertaining on many levels.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The reader could have been better once I got used to her.

An enjoyable read

Great book to listen to while working in the house. A light read with a little of everything: scifi., romance, ecological twists, and monsters, too. Looking forward to book two.

Great story, but it has some technical problems.

What made the experience of listening to Some Fine Day the most enjoyable?

The reader's performance was outstanding! I suspect I wouldn't have seen this one out to the end if the performance hadn't been so good. Her voice characterizations were intriguing enough to make me want to stick around until I was thoroughly hooked.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I liked it a lot.Left me hopeful for a sequel.

Have you listened to any of Mary Robinette Kowal’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I intend to seek out other stories she's done.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As a mining engineer, I guffawed a few times.

Any additional comments?

This book has technical problems that could probably have been worked through without detracting from the story. I'll refrain from nitpicking it to death. If you can suspend disbelief and ignore some violations of the laws of physics, you will enjoy the story. The story line never lagged and there are several very interesting characters that could have their own books about their respective backstories.

Solid story, but suspension of disbelief required

The story
First thing: be prepared to suspend some disbelief. You can't go into this expecting a scientific (or even pseudo-scientific) explanation for a lot of what happens in this story, including how hypercanes are even a thing, how people live underground, the technology that has been developed, etc. All that said, if you're willing and able to suspend your disbelief, it's a very enjoyable story. I liked the main character and I like her narrative voice. The ending is definitely set up for a sequel (although it doesn't necessarily NEED one, I guess...), but I've checked back every year since I first bought this book and it doesn't seem like one is coming :( But if she ever does write a sequel, I will definitely be buying it.

The narration
Her voice is perfect for the main character and her narration. Her voices for pretty much every male character are awful. I was re-listening to this one recently, and the first time the main character's father spoke, I about spit out my drink, because I did NOT remember his voice sounding so stupid. Fortunately, her narration voice is generally so good that I can forgive the terrible male voices (and the pretty obnoxious accents she gives everyone). That being said, if you're someone who is particularly sensitive to stupid voices, you may need to skip this one...

Great voice!

Interesting conflict. Good character development. Love the world building. Jansen's voice and strength make her a great female protagonist. Awesome read. I want more.

Nice story

Quite an unbelievable main character. A super commando 16 year old girl who can still be vulnerable. One line illustrates this well, she takes the gun out of her waist band and curls up in a ball next to her mom. But, you can see by 4 stars that it didn't take too much away. Love scenes, no sex scenes. Kinda slow in the middle and continues unpredictably yet believable in the world the author created. To enjoy a book I need to want what the good guys want- this is one of those. The underground world, labs, buildings, and above ground world were described well enough for me to imagine them. Also, the voice used for some of the male characters makes them sound like dolts, but the same goes for male readers doing female characters.

Thus really is not typically my kind of story, but I really enjoyed this book. I look forward to finding similar stories.
