About this listen

Holly Stewart moved into Solace House thinking it would be a fresh start for her and her family. She knew a tragic murder had taken place there, but she didn’t know the full ghastly history of the house.

Now, her husband has lost his job, the children are bullied at school, and someone is prowling around the garden at night. Someone who wants them gone.

Detective Jackman wants to help. Instead he’s been pulled into a 20-year-old cold case. The gruesome murder of a young woman whose head was never found. A new witness comes forward. He claims to have crucial evidence on what really happened that night.

Days later, a group of litter-pickers uncover black sacks containing dismembered human limbs. Attending the scene, DS Marie Evans is shocked to see a strange symbol carved into the victim’s flesh: the same symbol found on the headless girl all those years ago.

The murders must be connected. But why has the killer struck again — after 20years?

As the threats to the Stewart family escalate, Jackman must choose between helping people in the present and solving the crimes of the past.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you hooked until the explosive ending.

This was the best of the Jackman & Evans series, in terms of plot. It was taut all the way through, psychologically believable, and delivered a devastating blow to those of us who have grown fond of all of these people of the Fenland Constabulary.

Highly recommended, though perhaps with a tissue at the ready.

Richard Armitage gives his best narration of the series in this book. He nails accents and dialects in ways that have been missing in previous books. There are really good production values throughout.

My only question is how the Fens manage to attract such large crowds of psychopaths!

Best Jackman/Evans yet

I have really enjoyed this series. I'm invested in the characters and I can't wait to see what will happen next.

The narration by Richard Armitage is perfection. I wish he narrated everything on audible.

Good story - but the entire police force is so nice and kind…it makes the characters feel like they should be in a Hallmark movie.

Good but too goody goody

I think I have listened to almost all of the books in this series and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them all. There are a number of factors that make them so great for me. The narration by Richard Armitage is don so well. The character development and continuity of the investigative is engaging as are the plot twists and turns. I was delighted to find that I may have missed one book and plan to start that one next. So glad that Audible made this entire series available to membership.

Another wonderful listen

Joy Ellis + Richard Armitage = Perfection. This series continues to be amazing. As dark as the stories can get the characters and their humanity are bright lights.

Serendipity Pairing

The narrator Richard Armitage is among the best I’ve encountered. The slight modification in voice for the characters was first-rate. The story was good enough and it held my interest all the way through. (Whodunnit lovers rejoice!)

Engaging and Twisty

Solace House was an excellent, and overwhelmingly surprising read! I was terribly saddened by Laura’s death, and could not believe that her & Jackman’s romance had come to such a dramatic, explosive, heart wrenching ending! Yet, her death & the twists, turns, and characters were all realistic, as Ms. Ellis has delivered yet another phenomenal book.

Unbelievable Outcomes

I love these books and Richard Armitage did an amazing job as usual. I can’t wait for the next one.
