Publisher's summary

First appearances deceive in the newest charming and heartwarming Regency romance in the Westcott series from beloved New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh.

Abigail Westcott's dreams for her future were lost when her father died and she discovered her parents were not legally married. But now, six years later, she enjoys the independence a life without expectation provides a wealthy single woman. Indeed, she's grown confident enough to scold the careless servant chopping wood outside without his shirt on in the proximity of ladies. But the man is not a servant. He is Gilbert Bennington, the lieutenant colonel and superior officer who has escorted her wounded brother, Harry, home from the wars with Napoleon.

Gil has come to help his friend and junior officer recover, and he doesn't take lightly to being condescended to - secretly because of his own humble beginnings. If at first Gil and Abigail seem to embody what the other most despises, each will soon discover how wrong first impressions can be. For behind the appearances of the once-grand lady and the once-humble man are two people who share an understanding of what true honor means, and how only with it can one find love.

Another good one in the series

Gills character is very likeable and the overall story was well done. I like that occasionally Balough addresses difficult topics that are still pertinent to today. There were a few things I didn’t like. Namely, Abigail has been the sweet cheerful female in the series but she really wasn’t in this book. Usually Baloughs characters stay true to themselves but in this case it felt like a sudden shift change. Also, in the beginning I felt like maybe I’d missed a book between the last one and this. So much time had passed! As always there’s a lot of downtime and characters “thinking” and not enough of their love story development.

Not as enjoyable as her others..

I have to agree with other readers, like me, having listened to many of this authors works. Too much repetition in this story and describing the character Gil as unpleasant in the extreme. Rosalyn Landor is perfect as always which keeps me from deserting this read before the ending.

Finding Love

Loved this next book in the series. Abigail Westcott has been somewhat lost for the last 6 years when it was discovered that her father was a bigamist and that she after 18 years was illegitimate. When her brother Harry finally makes it home from war with the help of Lt. Colonel Gilbert Bennington she wants to stay and help. As she gets to know Gilbert she likes him better. When he explains some of his life her brother Harry suggests that they marry so he can gain custody of his daughter. A beautifully written story with an even more beautiful ending.

Too long

Found the book too long.....too dragged out.....too many repetitious phrases!
Was looking forward to old Balogh style.....
Why aren't her books in
Kindle Unlimited ?

The Westcott family is a great distraction

So far, I have loved all of Mary Balogh's books, and have thoroughly enjoy Rosalyn Landor's reading of them. if you like historical novels these will take you away to another time and place.

I cried lol

This story made me cry frustrated, sad, and happy tears. It was a very engaging story, and I only wish there was a 2nd epilogue for these two.

great story

this story might just be one of my favorites by this author. the hero is nothing like a man our heroine would have fallen in love with based on her character development in the earlier books based on the Wescotts. having to fight for custody of our heroes daughter was an emotional and interesting plot point. once again a great story by Mary Balogh and an awesome narration.

An Honorable and Worthy Listen

Go ahead and try it. This complex romance starts off pleasantly and, and without guile, develops into a rich story of interesting plots, characters and even more interesting romance. The Hero and Heroine are quite flawed at the outset yet what made this story engrossing for me was how each character noticed his or her misconceptions immediately and worked through them in an honest, way. The story is not burdened with misunderstandings and angst-ridden mental turmoil. At the end of the day, this story tells about how character is defined by actions, not words.
