About this listen

Presented by James Patterson's new children's imprint, this deliciously creepy horror novel has a storyline inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion.

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story's shocking twists and turns will make this dazzling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

Critic reviews

"Audrey Rose Wadsworth prefers breeches to ball gowns, autopsies to afternoon tea, and scalpels to knitting needles. Though her father, Lord Edmund, has forbidden it, Audrey covertly studies forensic medicine...while 'the Ripper' remains two steps ahead, lurking where Audrey least expects...." ( Booklist)
"This is a book that will keep you up at night and haunt you during the day." (Beth Revis, author of the New York Times best-selling series Across the Universe)
"Kerri Maniscalco paints a picture of nineteenth-century London that lives and breathes in wonderfully sinister fashion. You won't want to put this book down." (Renee Ahdieh, author of the New York Times best seller The Wrath and the Dawn)

I loved listening to this! The way they told the story was so entrancing, I sometimes forget where I'm at. Although some lines for the romance was cheesy, the overall way they performed this book was amazing!! I love it!!

Entrancing!

This isn't even my normal style, but I loved it anyways. I loved the constant battle our main character faced being a woman in a male dominated field. she didn't let anyone tear her down. The story is extremely dark, which I personally loved. There's a lot of blood and murder, which is what drew me to the book in the first place. I did predict one part of the ending, but was so thrown off by another part. I was in total shock.
I definitely recommend this for anyone who likes historical fiction or a story with a cool female lead that doesn't mind getting her hands dirty.

Great take on the historical version.

It was great , because the young woman does not give up easily on her dreams. especially as a forensic specialist in a Male dominated world. The end had a great twist. I thought this was great.

Great fictional read!

The narrator was perfect capturing the main character and supporting rolls. Easy to understand.
The story had great detail and some great twists. Including some real historical facts made the book come to life even more. The complexity with 1880s social behaviors, main character's curiosity and adventure, and great details of a forensic science from that time period will have you entertained and enticed.

Capturing, slightly twisted, and romantic
