About this listen

Step on a Crack: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!*

NYPD Detective Michael Bennett is about to take on the most sinister challenge of his career. The nation has fallen into mourning after the unexpected death of a beloved former first lady, and the most powerful people in the world gather in New York for her funeral. Then the inconceivable occurs. Billionaires, politicians, and superstars of every kind are suddenly trapped within one man's brilliant and cold-blooded scenario.

Bennett, father of 10, is pulled into the fray. As the danger escalates, he is hit with devastating news: After fighting for many years, his wife has succumbed to a terrible disease. As New York descends into chaos, he has lost the great love of his life, faces raising his heartbroken children alone, and must somehow rescue 34 hostages.

Day after day Bennett confronts the most ruthless man he has ever dealt with, a man who kills without hesitation and counters everything the NYPD and FBI throw at him with impunity. As the entire world watches and the tensions build to a searing heat, Bennett has to find a way out or face responsibility for the greatest debacle in history.

*Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration and complementary music. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration so that listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Music in the Background

The narrators are fine and the story is fine but who decided there should be music playing in the background?!! This is awful and takes away from getting into the story. Try sound effects but there is no need for music to play in the background while the narrator reads. This is making the experience horrible for me. I am pushing through b/c the story is good. I sure hope the rest of the books don't have music playing in the background.

Audio glitches

Although I really enjoyed the story, there were three places where the audio malfunctioned. Near the beginning, near chapter 33ish and during the last couple of minutes.
It didn’t ruin the book but I thought it was worth mentioning

Super Good Read!

I like Michael Bennett, his family and the story. The story line is well developed and thought out. The narrator's voice is well modulated and easy to listen to.

Great mystery, Drama and family combination

I really enjoyed this new cop series. It had great mystery woven throughout. Had no idea who the mastermind was. The cop drama mingled expertly with the family drama of Mike Bennett. I was crying by the end. Patterson did a wonderful job conveying the family dynamics and setting up Mikes family for the reader to want to see what happens next for their family as brilliantly if not more than the mystery expertly woven throughout the book.

I think I liked it...

It is of course a work of fiction and I am not sure how I am left after listening to the storyline swing from pathos to murder/ torture... Norman Rockwell meets Frankenstein. the narration is fantastic. the music often leant an appropriate ambiance and effect. I will give the series a chance and go to the next volume. your mileage may vary🙄

Background sound and musica

Patterson is a wonderful writer and the narrators are great as well. But the sound effects and music in the background is so distracting, annoying and frustrating. I hope this is not consistent in other Patterson audio books. I wish there was an option to turn the background sounds off.
