About this listen
With his signature acerbic wit and hilarious voice, 20-something author, blogger, and entrepreneur Shane Burcaw is back with an essay collection about living a full life in a body that many people perceive as a tragedy. From anecdotes about first introductions where people patted him on the head instead of shaking his hand, to stories of passersby mistaking his able-bodied girlfriend for a nurse, Shane tackles awkward situations and assumptions with humor and grace.
On the surface, these essays are about day-to-day life as a wheelchair user with a degenerative disease, but they are actually about family, love, and coming of age.

Writing about the rhythms and textures of what it means to live in a body that doesn’t fit, Rebekah reflects on everything from the complications of kindness and charity, living both independently and dependently, experiencing intimacy, and how the pervasiveness of ableism in our everyday media directly translates to everyday life. Disability affects all of us, directly or indirectly, at one point or another. Sitting Pretty challenges us as a society to be patient and vigilant, practical and imaginative, kind and relentless, as we set to work to write a different story.

For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school. Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience.

Story
Solitary is the unforgettable life story of a man who served more than four decades in solitary confinement - in a six-foot by nine-foot cell, 23 hours a day, in notorious Angola prison in Louisiana - all for a crime he did not commit. That Albert Woodfox survived was, in itself, a feat of extraordinary endurance against the violence and deprivation he faced daily. That he was able to emerge whole from his odyssey within America’s prison and judicial systems is a triumph of the human spirit, and makes his book a clarion call to reform the inhumanity of solitary confinement....

Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Story
Wildflower is a portrait of Drew's life in stories as she looks back on the adventures, challenges, and incredible experiences of her earlier years. It includes tales of living on her own at 14 (and how laundry may have saved her life), getting stuck in a gas station overhang on a cross-country road trip, saying good-bye to her father in a way only he could have understood, and many more adventures and lessons that have led her to the successful, happy, and healthy place she is today.

Story
When Amy B. Scher was struck with undiagnosed late-stage, chronic Lyme disease, the best physicians in America labeled her condition incurable and potentially terminal. Deteriorating rapidly, she went on a search to save her own life - from the top experts in Los Angeles and the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis to a state-of-the-art hospital in Chicago. After exhausting all of her options in the US, she discovered a possible cure - but it was highly experimental, available only in India, and had as much of a probability of killing her as it did of curing her.

Story
One of the funniest and most poignant books ever written about a mental illness, Agorafabulous! is a hilarious, raw, and unforgettable account of how a terrified young woman, literally trapped by her own imagination, evolved into a (relatively) high-functioning professional smartass. Down to earth and seriously funny, Benincasa's no-holds-barred revelations offer listeners the politically incorrect hilarity they heartily crave, yet is so often missing from your typical, weepy, and redemptive personal memoir.

Story
Emily Ratajkowski is an acclaimed model and actress, an engaged political progressive, a formidable entrepreneur, a global social media phenomenon, and now, a writer. Rocketing to world fame at age 21, Ratajkowski sparked both praise and furor with the provocative display of her body as an unapologetic statement of feminist empowerment. The subsequent evolution in her thinking about our culture’s commodification of women is the subject of this book.

Hilariously Amazing!!
I came across Shane & Hannah’s story via their YouTube channel. They’re so open and hilarious and simply amazing to share their story. I pre ordered this book after hearing about it on their channel and I wanted to know more about their history and relationship. Shane does such an amazing job in this book, giving detailed looks at some of the most significant moments in their relationship. I literally laughed out loud at many of his tellings of certain events. Not only did he give a good picture of their history and how finding love impacted his life but also brought to my attention much of the preconceived ideas I find myself having when I see what turns out to be an inter-abled couple. It was definitely eye opening.
He cracks jokes at his writing skills but I think it was an excellently laid out book and I’m heading to purchase his first book right now.

Great book by an awesome guy.
Shane Burcaw is a great author, an excellent youtuber, and someone whose presence in my life via silly internet videos and now two books has made my life better. He always brings a smile to my face, and it has nothing to do with his SMA. Shane has such a wonderful sense of humor that leaps off the page in his books and radiates through the screen in his videos. I highly suggest this book, his first book Laughing at my Nightmare, his YouTube channel Squirmy and Grubs, and anything else he's involved in. His uplifting positivity and humor is a great distraction from all the chaos around us every day. Stop considering buying this book and just freaking do it! haha.

Loved it!
I've been watching Squirmy & Grubs on YouTube for 2 months and looked forward to reading this book. What an amazing, intelligent, compassionate - and hilarious - couple! Shane's writing is just like him - warm, self-deprecating (in a good, funny way), brutally honest and intelligent. I only wish this book had lasted many more chapters because I didn't want it to end!

Easy listen, funny light hearted but lots of drama
I have been a fan of Squirmy and Grubs YouTube channel for many years but didn’t pick up the books. Wow, very impressed. I knew Shane was quick witted but it really shines through in this book. Also very thankful to know Shane curses IRL which i suspected lol. This is a story of someone who is just realizing their place in the world and the challenges that lead to overcoming that and obviously in relation to him having SMA. Relatable on so many levels. Loved the performance as well, hard to follow Shane whose voice and delivery we know so well.
