About this listen

Do you know what really triggers panic attacks? Are you aware of what thinking patterns create anxiety? Are you a chronic worrier? Have you ever self-medicated with alcohol or tranquilizers? According to mental health professionals, anxiety disorders have emerged as the common cold of mental illness. Every family is touched in some way or another by anxiety issues and, with ever-increasing frequency, diagnosable anxiety disorders.

In Take Control of Your Anxiety--an easy-to-read self-help book for the layperson--Drs. Cortman, Shinitzky, and O'Connor present the current understanding of anxiety: its genesis in the brain, its functions and contributions to human survival and growth, and its progression to pathology. Each of the five major anxiety disorders is featured in a chapter that explores its etiology, practical steps, and exercises for successful resolution and real-life case studies of patients who have overcome the disorder. The authors use some levity to teach their concepts, including Dr. Seuss-like poems, popular music parodies, and other easy-to-remember aids. A toolbox of simple resources and self-help techniques is also included. Most important, the authors emphasize a non-harmaceutical, evidence-based approach to mastering anxiety issues and living a productive, well-balanced life.

Critic reviews

" Take Control of Your Anxiety...[shows] how to find the right personal strategies to manage [your] emotions to acceptable levels.... The best investment [you] can make to rapidly and securely...understand how to change perceptions in order to intentionally reach the most comfortable state of balance between extreme forces in opposition: 'stress-less-ness' versus 'anxiety'. A must-read!" (Patrick Moraz, composer, musician, and producer)

Methods Work, Refreshing, Effective, Hopeful!

What did you love best about Take Control of Your Anxiety?

These methods actually worked for me and made a measurable difference in my life. His tools (by changing my way of thinking), significantly reduced my anxiety. All of this was done DRUG and MEDICATION-FREE. It was refreshing to listen to because he has an amazing sense of humor, which helped me to relax and stop taking everything so seriously. I don't take time to write reviews, but I had to with this book because the methods described significantly and measurably reduced my anxiety without medications and drugs. I used to grab a pill or a drink to reduce my anxiety before, but I have made a commitment to myself to stay off all pills/medications. I would say I have about a 50% reduction in my overall anxiety just from listening to this book, turning it off and verbally going through the exercises while driving, turning it back on, thinking about what he said, then applying the techniques through the day, being very aware what I was thinking and feeling. I was really struggling thinking that I would not be able to control my anxiety without medication, but I was wrong. This is absolutely possible for me. And I believe it may be possible for others. That's why I'm taking time to write this long review. God bless this man and his work. Thank you so much.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Take Control of Your Anxiety?

His refreshing humor sprinkled throughout and the multiple tools described to control anxiety--without drugs or medication.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It must be taken in small pieces. I had to stop and turn off the book to take time and work out the exercises and really think about what he was saying. I didn't want to miss an important point just because I was in a hurry to jump to the next chapter. Each exercise actually made an impact and helped to restructure my thought-process.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended for anyone with anxiety. I also used this book as a supplement with my daily morning meditation for the past 9 months. Together, I am becoming a new person. There IS hope for all of us.
