Story
A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed to the scheme. The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was richer, and far more complex, than anything the two men had imagined.

Everywhere around you are distractions: That text you respond to quickly, just to get it out of the way. The newest money-making side hustle to cross your mind. The evening spent organizing your overflowing kitchen cupboards. Disruptions are the enemies of a life well lived—both the new distractions of our generation and timeless ones that have existed for centuries. They all add up to make you feel restless, tired, and unfulfilled. They’re keeping you from living with joy, from accomplishing the good that only you can do.

In her midforties, Gwendolyn Bounds attended a dinner party where someone asked a little girl: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It struck Bounds: In middle age, no one asks you that anymore. So she put the question to herself. The answer set her on an unexpected five-year path of transformation from an unathletic office executive glued to her screens to an age-group medalist and world championship competitor in obstacle course racing—a demanding military-style sport requiring speed, endurance, mobility, and strength.

This is a terrific audiobook. It's interesting, well-written, and timely. It's the story of a textbook editor who retires, reads the popular book The Wild Effect and decides to hike the Appalachian Trail - and have an unexpected adventure! The tone is wry humor, tongue in cheek - the author has a great sense of humor, is perky, and as she learns in this adventure, is often in over her head! She is a very likeable character.

Story
At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

Publisher's summary
In this personal journey, ultra-light backpacker and sought-after speaker Glen Van Peski shares the life lessons he has learned through years of lightening his pack and helping others. Adventures provide the richness and texture to a life well lived. So remain open. Keep saying "YES" to life's opportunities.
Glen Van Peski helped revolutionize backpacking by creating ultralight equipment, which allows people to take less so they can do more in the wilderness. During decades of championing ultralight backpacking, Glen became aware that “take less, do more” is more than just a hiking slogan. As he reduced his pack weight, he realized that the lessons learned applied to areas of life. Now he wants to share the lessons he learned to help others live full and vibrant lives—lives characterized by purpose, meaning, and joy.
In this book, you will discover transformative life lessons, which may go against the grain of popular thought but have been proven to change lives for the better. You'll learn that: Often the best strategy for achieving goals comes from subtracting rather than adding.
When your first instinct is generosity, the long-term dividends will be greater than if you strive to gain your own advantage.
Revising the stories you tell yourself about situations will re-frame your life and increase gratitude.
By investing creatively in relationships, you will generate more joy in your life.
Making friends with failure will cause you to grow and improve. take less. do more. It's a revolutionary idea that will transform your life and free your soul to find your purpose—and maybe a little bit of adventure too.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

William Least Heat-Moon set out with little more than the need to put home behind him and a sense of curiosity about "those little towns that get on the map-if they get on at all-only because some cartographer has a blank space to fill: Remote, Oregon; Simplicity, Virginia; New Freedom, Pennsylvania; New Hope, Tennessee; Why, Arizona; Whynot, Mississippi." His adventures, his discoveries, and his recollections of the extraordinary people he encountered along the way amount to a revelation of the true American experience.

Packs a Lot in a Small Package (Appropriately)
This is much more than a backpacking book. There are backpacking tips here, especially for those who want to lighten their load.
But the book is really a compilation of life lessons. The book will make you think and helps make you see the good things.
It is not a long book, but it is efficient--which seems appropriate for an ultralight backpacker.

Lessons of Interconnectedness
Inspiring and entertaining. GVP has some great stories to tell from his years exploring the wilderness and from his daily life. Lots of valuable material, delivered efficiently, as one would expect from a master of ultralight.

Been Waiting for Years for this Book...
I’ve followed Glen’s story since my first GG pack almost 25 years ago. Like Glen, I’ve been fascinated by the world of ultralight backpacking for a very large chuck of my life. I could connect to so many of the themes in this book. His focus on saying “yes” to opportunities even when a person is an introvert was a centerpiece for me. And the focus on gratitude and generosity were both things I think so many people could really benefit from. Thank you Glen for finally putting your thoughts and wisdom in a form that so many can access. It’s yet another gift you have given.

Life Changing
I thought I was about to listen to another backpacking book about life on the trail. Glen shares valuable lessons about life, putting yourself out there, being creative, getting out of your comfort zone and so much more. His story is one to remember and an example to all of us. Such an amazing read. I read the book and listened to it again on audible. Did not want to miss a thing!

The author’s self congratulatory remarks
What I hoped would be an insightful look at reductive approaches to pack weight seems instead to be a self-congratulatory essay on how he lives a better, simpler life (With his 2 vacation homes I'm sure). A sense of "My way of living is better and should be aspired to" pervades the book. Terrible!
