Publisher's summary

What type of leadership is needed in a moment that demands adaptive change? Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains, is uniquely positioned to explore the qualities of adaptive leadership in contexts ranging from churches to nonprofit organizations. He deftly examines both the external challenges we face and the internal resistance that holds us back.

Bolsinger writes: "To temper describes the process of heating, holding, hammering, cooling, and reheating that adds stress to raw iron until it becomes a glistening knife blade or chisel tip."

When reflection and relationships are combined into a life of deliberate practice, leaders become both stronger and more flexible. As a result, these resilient leaders are able to offer greater wisdom and skill to the organizations they serve.

Making Change Leadership Practical

Tod Bolsinger’s book hooked me with his organizing metaphor of blacksmithing. The combination of distilling the ideas of transformational leadership with his stories makes this a book I will read over and over again.

This Book is amazing!

This Book is amazing! It has affirmed me as a change leader, given me vocabulary to describe who I am, changed my prospective on institutional/church change, and given me tools to temper and hone going forward! Thank you Tod!

Find grace for yourself and refresh your purpose

Resilience is now my new word for the year! I found this book to be refreshing and enlightening. Be sure to listen through the entire book. There are some helpful statistics about change initiatives toward the end. The book also offers some thoughts to help filter when to move on as a leader of change.

Simple

While the stories are good, it’s a long way to say that resilience is important for leaders.

book was okay.

Book was okay. Narator was dry and unengaging. The content was general, but aligned with scripture well.
