About this listen

Where the lighthouse no longer illuminates, ghostly lore and legends emerge …

1874

A battered woman awakens atop a forgotten gravesite by Lake Superior's southern shore. Identified only by the locket around her neck inscribed with the name Rebecca, she seeks refuge with an elderly lighthouse keeper. But as Rebecca struggles to remember who she is, she finds herself haunted by the lingering memories of Annabel, a mysterious woman who perished in the lake's unforgiving waves years earlier. With the spirit of Annabel seemingly reawakened, and an unknown adversary on the hunt to silence Rebecca once and for all, more is at stake than reclaiming her own memories. Rebecca must reclaim Annabel's as well.

Present Day

Author and researcher Shea Radclyffe escapes to the lighthouse outside a historic Michigan mining town to seek clarity about her failing marriage. Instantly drawn to the lighthouse's landlord, Shea contends with the legend of Annabel's vengeful ghost and a superstitious community that has buried the truth about a current murder. As the secrets harbored around Annabel's lighthouse unravel, Shea must navigate a fight between torn loyalty, self-discovery, and the haunting forces of love.

… demanding vengeance for secrets that should have drowned a century before.

Mysteries and danger abound! Excellent!

I enjoyed listening to this book. Jaime Jo Wright writes an amazing dual timeline fictional story surrounding the mysterious Annabel Lee, of Poe’s poem. In current day, Shea is researching the story and mysterious things and ghostly sightings happen while she is warned off by everybody! Who can she trust? In the past, a story is spun of Annabel’s daughter with traumatic amnesia and the family and loves of Annabel. Very suspenseful and full of mystery and danger and surprises. Amazing!

Story & narrators - neither disappoint!

Enjoying this tale. First time I’ve listened to a Jaime Jo Wright book. Usually I read her tomes in paperback or Kindle. Thought I would branch out for a little extra intrigue in the audio version. Narrators delivering!

Dual Timeline with a Gothic Flare

The audio quality of this novel is quite good, although I noticed some small skips in the narration of chapters two and three. The narration is very crisp and clear, which is extremely important for me as a hearing-impaired person.
Jaime Jo Wright is an amazing author and hits another one out of the park! Historical character Rebecca has amnesia after being found injured on Annabel’s grave near the lighthouse. Current day character Shea is trying to write a book about the historical lighthouse while musing about her stale marriage and has some disturbing encounters. I love the way this author moves seamlessly between eras without confusing the reader. Her word building is also beyond impeccable, and each chapter begins with a verse of the poem of Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe, which lends a gothic flare and sets the tone perfectly. There is also a secondary theme of love and care for one another that presents itself much stronger towards the end of the novel. . Please note that the idea of ghosts or specters are definitely part of the plot line, but there is always an explanation that is NOT of the supernatural the author herself calls this the Scooby Doo element. This is definitely not a horror novel!
I have read all of the Jaime Jo Wright’s books since she was first published in 2017. She just has a way with words like no other and a style that is hers alone! She is also a multiple award-winning author. I have no qualms about recommending any of her thirteen titles.
I purchased this book from Baker Book House and purchased an AUDIBLE copy as well, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
