About this listen

Young Huck is an industrious, fiercely independent boy who escapes his abusive, drunken father and sets out on an unforgettable journey down the Mississippi River. Enjoying his freedom, he befriends a kindhearted slave named Jim, whose suffering teaches Huck powerful lessons about racism, personal liberty, and the complexities of life. Revolutionary for its realistic dialogue and uncompromising plot, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is arguably the greatest of all American novels, and a powerful sequel to Mark Twain's lighthearted classic, Tom Sawyer.

"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn." (Ernest Hemingway)

Although the audiobook is missing quite a bit of Mark Twain's original writing, the incomparable Garrison Keillor makes up the difference. A more than solid reading of a timeless classic. I just wish they hadn't skipped over a large chunk of the story, such as the attempted grifting of the orphan girls, and Huck's improbable meeting of Tom Sawyer 1000 miles away from their home, and their adventure in trying to free Jim from captivity.

Garrison Keillor amazing, but missing chapters

Great, all around. Do yourself a favor and read/listen or re-read this American classic. Twain is a master storyteller.

The perfect narrator for this story.

Great classic read from a fantastic narrator. I listened to this book first 'on tape' when I was a kid. Glad I found this version here!

Great classic story told by Garrison Keeler. Keeler makes Huck, Jim and the rest of the characters come alive like no other can. Fantastic story and a fantastic listen. You will not be disappointed.

What can a person say but" Excellent!"

Enjoyed narrator and the different voices which reflected the culture of the American Midwest with its biases and the courage of young Huck and his relationship to Jim.

Great story by a great author.

I would listen to Garrison Keillor read the phone book, but his voice combined with Twain's classic prose and characterizations is just the highest listening experience a person could ask for. Keep reading, Garrison!

Absolutely amazing novel . The bond between Huck and Jim was so moving. The scene where Huck declares ‘I’ll go to hell then’’what he chooses to save Jim even though the law and - he believed- God commanded that he not. It is one of the purest and most powerful scenes in all of literature.

The amazing power of his storytelling

I skipped this book in the required reading list in High School, so I am now trying to fill the gaps left in my education. I really enjoyed the story, as I expected I would. However, since I read the abridged version, it wrapped up very quickly and left some unanswered questions. The narration was first rate, however.

Abridged version left some holes

I was trying to listen to this book with my daughter during our morning commute. We had to stop after 30 minutes after we got tired of the narrator’s voice and performance. Not sure why he decided to whisper the whole thing. It was very hard to feel engaged. We just bought a different version narrated by Kerry Shale that we are enjoying very much.

Performance not engaging
