About this listen

Winner of the B.R.A.G. Medallion, Audiobook Reviewer's Book of the Year for horror/occult, and runner-up in the Los Angelas Book Festival.

In the Philippines, there are shape-shifting creatures known as aswang. Among them, none are more feared than the manananggal, a vile creature that rips itself in half as it takes to the night to hunt for its favorite prey—the unborn.

To Alexander, his family on his mother's side were strangers, the country they lived in just a spot on the map, and their beliefs nothing more than superstitions and folklore.

While accompanying his mother on her trip home after the death of his chronically ill father, however, Alexander is shown a world larger than he could have ever guessed, one both as enriching as it could be deadly.

To keep his family safe, Alexander must risk his life to fight off an undead infant, make alliances with witches, and battle with the most dangerous creature of all—The Baby-Eater.

Loved it!

Really enjoyed this book, Here is why:
- The story keeps moving and each scene/segment/encounter is different and interesting. There is no 'rinse and repeat'. I think this would actually make a really good movie.
- Not only was it good horror but I also learned a ton about the Philippines.
- It's funny at times,
- I usually stay away from author narrated books but the author is actually a really good narrator.

My only complaint is that sometimes, the MC is just dumb, luckily for us he snaps out of it fairly quickly.

If you like horror, definitely give this one a try!

Entertaining

I really enjoyed listening to this book, it kept me on the edge of my seat at times, made me laugh, smile, but most importantly it kept me wanting to know more about what was about to happen next. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in a well-written and well narrated story.

Awesomely Terrifying!

Alexander travels with his mother to their home country. There he will meet his mother’s family who has always been a mystery to him. Once there, Alexander discovers that ignorance is bliss. He comes face to face with a dark evil being that is hunting. It is up to Alexander to not only protect his family but find a way to defeat this evil being.

The author, Chad Morgan carefully weaves a world of mind-blowing creatures that hunt unsuspecting humans. The most vulnerable humans will bring shock and then tears to your eyes as the creature sweeps them up. The storyline is sheer terror! The plot twists are surprising and terrifying. The characters are well developed. The storyline begins slowly at first but continues to gain speed and action. Morgan describes everything in detail to put his listener at ease before terrifying them. I listened to this in one sitting then went off to sleep for the night – don’t do this! The descriptions are so vivid you won’t sleep!

The narrator (also the author), Chad Morgan milks the terror in the story to its fullest. He spoke clearly and with a steady cadence. Morgan’s investment in his story is reflected in his performance. I thought he gave a good solid performance and look forward to hearing and reading more from him.

Overall, this is a fear-inducing book of terror that provides a rich experience. Part of me wants to see this as a movie but honestly, without spoiling the book, this would be one of those movies watched between my fingers! Excellent book for those who love horror-filled stories that will linger into your dreams.

Fun and entertaining

I very much enjoyed 'The Last Rite' by Chad Morgan and reread the last couple of chapters before reading this. I might not have bothered as they are only tangentially connected. Don't let this put you off, though; what Morgan manages here is a super fun frolic in the jungle with a surprising amount of heart. I look forward to his next book.

Different and quirky

Good story and the author does a fair job with narration. Setting is different, but the horror and story are good.

Funny and interesting!

The bay-eater is a folklore story about a monster that eats babies. The younger and less experienced in the world the better. Alexander finds himself mixed up with the baby-eater and works tofind a way to get rid of it once and for all. It's immortal so can't be killed by any conventional means. The dialogue had me laughing many times especially at the end with the people of the village. It's a solid story with a good flow and plot. The characters were rich and the descriptions were just right, not too much, not too little.

Freaky and Unique Story

I found The Baby-Eater to be a book with a freaky but very unique storyline about a Filipino creature that needs to be stopped and it is up to two young people to convince an entire small community of its existence. I loved how the story plays out with a quirky cast of very believable characters. I received this book from Audiobooks Unleashed and this is my honest unbiased review.

Different

I have not read many books in which folklore has been intertwined in the story. I was positively surprised on how well and interesting it was done in this book. I really enjoyed this book and certainly hope there will be another.

Real page turner

Here's an incredible tale that I wish had actual pages because if it did, I would turn those pages so fast it would make the same sound those old baseball cards did when I stuck them in the wheel of my Huffy. An amazingly deep tale full of darkness and despair. This book will stick with you, especially after dark. Narration is great.
