About this listen

“Drag embodies the queer possibility that exists within each of us—the infinite ways in which gender, good taste, and art can be lived.”

Sasha Velour

This book is a quilt, piecing together memoir, history, and theory into a living portrait of an artist and an art. Sasha Velour illuminates drag as a unique form of expression with a rich history and a revolutionary spirit.

Each chapter strips off a new layer, removing one tantalizing glove and then another, to reveal all the twists and turns in the life of a queen. As Sasha recalls her own journey, from the women who raised her, to learning the craft of an artist, to success, disaster, and more, she also uncovers the history of queer life around the world that made it all possible.

From shamans to “fairies balls,” empresses to RuPaul’s Drag Race (and beyond), The Big Reveal chronicles and celebrates our shared queer pasts. “If we want to be seen as legendary,” writes Sasha, “we have to weave ourselves into history.”

From an iconoclastic drag queen comes an equally singular, thought-provoking manifesto that brings necessary and sparkling substance to our understanding of drag, queerness, beauty, and liberation!

Part history, part philosophy, part autobiography. It was beautiful and well-done. Definitely a book I’ll read again.

the history!

It was so great listening to the history on gay culture and drag, something I was brought up to know very little about. Sasha also tells a story in such a way, you never want to stop listening! Definitely worth

Heartfelt Engaging Informative Drag Herstory

I truly love every minute of this book.

It is truly enhanced even more if you have the physical copy to leave along with you can do the photograph and illustration that goes along with the story. I love the way the story integrate personal and feels and personal stories from childhood and beyond in addition to history of drag artist and arts and culture and queer culture throughout time.

5 stars across the board

This book was a delight to hear. I have to be honest, I feared that I wouldn’t be able to go through it without falling asleep, because (like many) I find Sasha’s voice very soothing.

However, it was impossible. It had me hooked from the very beginning: the history, the anecdotes, the moments of reflection and self awareness, the words of advice, and most importantly: a sense of community was truly present throughout the whole book. This is truly a love letter AND an historical document of drag.

I can’t stress how important it was listening to the story of not only the art form of drag but also the people who enjoyed, celebrated and protected it.

I leave this listening wanting to be a protector myself, specially at times like these…

Thank you, Sasha! Truly, I can’t thank you enough.

Brilliant & beautiful!

This book is everything we need right now. It charts a desire line between the queer past and future, drag and the act of creation/art-making. Thank you, Sasha Velour!

Just wow

It's well thought out and incredibly congestive and while to follow. At the same time Sasha is relatable and witty. She packs in so much history and humor. I cannot recommend this book enough.

This book is a reveal of Sasha’s self and all the traditions given to her to create her identity. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend!
