About this listen

Morgan Spencer has had just about all he can take of life. Following the tragic death of his wife, Jill, he retreats to his brother's Rocky Mountain ranch to heal and focus on the care of his infant daughter, Olivia. Two years later, Morgan begins to make plans to return to his home in Santa Barbara to pick up the pieces of his life and career.

Quinn Riley has been avoiding her past for four years. Standing up for the truth has forced her into a life of fear and isolation. After a "chance" first meeting and a Thanksgiving snowstorm, Quinn is drawn into the Spencer family's warm and loving world, and she begins to believe she might find freedom in their friendship. The man Quinn helped put behind bars has recently been released, however, and she fears her past will endanger the entire Spencer family. As the danger heightens, she determines to leave town for the sake of the people who have come to mean so much to her. Fixing problems is what Morgan Spencer does best, and he is not willing to let Quinn run away, possibly into the clutches of a man bent on revenge. But Morgan's solution sends him and Quinn on an unexpected path, with repercussions neither could have anticipated.

Pretty Dern Good!!

I wasn’t expecting this book to be this good, but it is!!! Morgan and Erin’s story is beautifully written with realistic events. I think I may have found a new author to add to my list, and a new narrator to give two thumbs up!!

I loved watching Morgan finally find happiness.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes it was emotional and enjoyable and kept my interest.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Morgan. I loved watching him find happiness and he seemed to find peace.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it only took me a couple of days to read it in spite of work.

Any additional comments?

I was really glad to see another story in this series. The previous book about Morgan and Jill and their daughter who died was very depressing so I really enjoyed this book.

Great story - not so great narration

This was a very good story, but I would recommend reading the book instead of listening. The narrator wasn’t consistent with the voices, and it was often difficult to differentiate between the male and female characters based on the narration.

Heart wrenching!

The whole series had disappointments as there would be in real life. Morgan and Jill’s daughters death and then Jill’s death made me wonder if Morgan would pull thru the pain.

Great writing

Every book has characters and plot and setting, but not all writers make every word worth listening to. Heitzmann writes a great sentence. Her prose is worth the read and worth the listen; every word is a pleasure.

I liked the book and own the Kindle version. I wanted to listen because listening calls attention to things I glossed over when reading. The narrator is a good reader who interprets most parts well, but she did not do justice to characters’ voices. She sometimes uses the same intonation for different characters which makes listening a little confusing, and Hannah’s voice sounds too much like a child. This said, I still enjoyed the listen. The reader did a decent job otherwise.

The story has some horror / supernatural elements which add to the overall macabre atmosphere of the book at times, but these do not overshadow the characters’ development. There is an evil spirit which is malevolent but not really developed other than causing despair and destruction.

At its essence, the book is about healing after loss, experiencing grief, loving after loss, forgiveness, revenge, physical love in marriage, and new family. Both main characters have their secrets, or rather, they do not know each other that well and have to get to know each other little by little throughout the story. What seem like secrets are just them not really knowing each other. They don’t hold these against one another. Instead, they work out their relationship together by communicating both physically and verbally. They also work on themselves individually and internally with self- reflection. I liked how Morgan took the lead in this regard. The book gives a healthier view of relationships than most Christian romance fiction does.

The characters make each other better while also giving us something to ponder. One example is how differently each character views expensive clothes and food. Quinn looks at things one way, Morgan another. The book creatively calls attention to this in a manner that gets listeners thinking about their own reactions and relationships.

The book has some Biblical references and Christian themes. It seems roughly based on the story of Ruth, though it is neither allegorical nor a retelling of the story. Quinn gets a new name which also reminded me of Adam naming Eve. There are other things, but the book is structured to exemplify these kinds of themes without being preachy and overbearing. Overall, a great book & worth the read and listen.
